I promised to do a print but I don't know how to make my image fit the size requested without hacking out the subject? If anyone can give me some tips it would be EVER so GRATEFUL! WHY? WHO would make it this difficult?

I think in order for anyone to help out, a little more info may be needed. Especially need to know what software you are using that is giving you the trouble.

It sounds like an aspect ratio problem to me.
There is no way to get an 8x10 out of a DSLR camera(not counting olympus) without cropping the image. The image will come out to 8x12 if left alone out of the camera.

I used a Canon rebel xs and using Photoshop cs3. Wow! I feel like I am learning everything the hard way...... really you cannot get a dslr image to 8x10 w/o cropping your frame? It took me time to consider the whole frame when taking the photo...
THANK YOU for the replies!

Depending on the photo, sometimes you can add to the top and bottom to get to the right ratio but that can be challenging most of the time.
I'm really not a fan of the 8x10 but that's such a common frame size, it just won't go away.

Now it's time for you to get creative!

You'll find that "most" cameras output formats that are very close to the 4x6 "snapshot" ratio. Many more 4x6 prints are sold than any other format I would guess.

In PS, go to Image > Canvas size and click on the bottom center arrow and put in the new size where is says "Height".
Now you will have a blank space above your image. That will need to be filled by copying part of the image, cloning, adding text, graphics, etc.

Can you post the image in question here?

EDIT: Never mind, I see you did post the image.

I think it can be done with this photo, adding a little more to the top and then resizing. My gosh! So much to learn.

Here's what it would look like 8x10. This has some sloppy cloning, but you get the idea.

WOW! SWEET!! Yes this is one technique that I will have to practice.
Knowing this now, what's the best way to handle these ratio issues? While taking the photo or post process?

Try to leave room when you shoot. That way you just crop to whatever size you need.
You can add "crop marks" in the view finder of some cameras so you know where 8x10 is at as you shoot. I've never done that, I just leave a little extra space.
