Monitor Calibration - 09-19-2011, 12:24 AM

Are there any places in Houston to rent a monitor calibrator like X-Rite eye-one or one of their other units?

Or maybe someone here owns one and wants to make a few bucks from it?

Generally you'll recalibrate in 2 to 4 weeks so buying can make more sense in the long run.

Sohil;

Renting/leasing from members is not permitted.

As this noted in the Buy/Sell Rules thread.

4) NO Gear Renting/Rental
There will be NO "Want To Rent:" type threads looking to rent equipment from other members. This opens up the person renting the equipment to a whole lot of risk.

I was expecting the X-rite eye-one display 2 (?) to be more but at $100, it's seems reasonable... and easy on the wallet.

However, I did want to test one out before owning it.

Mine barks at me if I don't re-calibrate it once every 4-6 weeks. I typically re-calibrate though depending on the ambient lighting of the room at time that I am editing prints.

Do any of you do monitor calibration for images you send out to commercial printers like Millers? I'm considering getting an x-rite, but most of the info on it discusses calibrating my monitors for my in house printers, and I expect to outsource almost all my printing.

Thanks!

Calibrating your monitor, for the most part, is just setting it to a known state. Like zeroing it out. There are adjustments in the process that take in to account viewing conditions, but during calibration, monitor color is not adjusted to match the printer.

Ok, how do you insure what you get back from the printer will match what you saw on the screen? Especially flat printing versus backlit leds?

Some of the brands (ColorMunki for example) will calibrate both your monitor and printer so that what you see is what you get when printing. I believe Spyder makes a printer calibration device, but I'm not sure if it sync's up with the monitor calibration which is the selling point (supposedly) of the all-in-ones.

There are a number of theories on color management.
Here is Miller's take on calibration:

I’m trying to get my printer to match what’s on the monitor. I have CS-5 Photoshop that I’m using for corrections. I’m trying to match my Eizo ColorEdge CG223W monitor to my Canon iPF5100 printer. At this point they are not even close. I also have a Colormunki for calibrating the monitor. I seem to have all the right equipment, what I need is someone to help me tune it all together.

Do you have some recommendations on who to use?

Les,

IMHO, calibrating your entire system is not an easy chore or something which can be done simply by just buying the corrrect things and flipping a few switches.

There are so many variables, it's hard to be able to tell. Is your monitor off, or the printer, or both? Are you looking the print under tungsten light? I'm not sure if there is any person who provides this service other than a commercial printer.

Another option, is to educate your self with either Fraser's book (more technical) or steinmuller's (more in layman's language).

Sorry I can't be of more help....hope it works out.
