Printing to canvas - 07-03-2006, 09:51 PM

When I visited the Rockport Art Festival last saturday I noticed that the larger images were printed on canvas. One of the people that had their work on display told me that they printed their images themselves. Their printer took rolled stock (canvas). After the image is printed on the canvas they streched the canvas over some sort of frame (which I assume is what you do with canvas before you paint it). Some of the images were (I'm guessing) 36" x 42". They also sprayed a UV resistant coating over the final version. It looked great. Most images of that size sold for $400 - $900 each. If someone bought them they sold for that.

Anyone know who makes a printer that prints that large? I wonder what the per print cost is for something like that?

$6.00 a square foot is not bad at all. I wonder what the quality is. No prices on that site :o( Somehow I have a feeling that it's not going to be something for the average user to buy :o)

Ahh... not $6.00 a ft². So... it wouldn't take many large prints to pay for a printer. Still, it's not in the realm of the casual user... unless money is no object... whatever that means.

Code:
    *  Canvas Media Guide
    * Fine Art Watercolor Price List
    * Photo Semi-Gloss or Glossy Price List

We use InkJetArt Canvas, and Epson Canvas. All canvas prints include a 1" - 2" margin to allow for stretching
or mounting of canvas prints. All prints are sprayed with a clear, top-coating that is water-resistant and filters
out over 99% of the harmful UV light.

Ultrachrome - w/Archival Pigmented Ultrachrome Color Inks (Epson Stylus Pro 9600/7600),
Estimated 80 - 100 years longevity.
