On Site Printing, Which Printer Do You Use - 04-27-2005, 12:34 PM

If you do on site printing, what printer do you use and how happy are you with it? Thinking of upgrading to another printer? Which one, why?

Thanks,
Greg

I have two: an epson CX5200 all in one that does a great job with 8x10's and an HP 7660 that does even better and has a 4x6 tray as well. I like the Epson mainly for the ability to change individual inks, but print quality on both is very good....not custom lab good, but good...

I have the Canon i900D. Great pics, and comes with a 4x6 tray.

I use an Epson R1800 and it is fabulous! Largest photo size i have printed is 8 1/2 by 11 i believe and it was just great, color representation was true to a calibrated monitor with printer icc profiles, etc. Used glossy paper and it is not faded at all with over 100 year archival time.

I have noticed minor "pizza cutter" "roller" markings on some of the prints, but honestly it is very hard to tell they are there unless the print catches the right light. I have not had time to research the problem any, so i do not know if it is a recurring issue, etc -- but it is rather annoying in some case.

But, overall print quality is better than labs do it and the printer can print BIG sizes, although it does have a very large footprint.

I use the Canon i9900. Prints up to 13x19.

I use this printer onsite at a number of venues. It is large but portable.

I use a Canon i960. Does a great job I think but the largest print size is 8 1/2"x11". I guess I'll go to an outside print source for anything larger.

I'm using the Epson R300 and getting great results, especially on my portrait work (PS CS).

I have an inexpensive HP 7450 on the internet machine. It produces excellent quality on photos but I've only used it for 4x6 and below (Elements 1). I have not used it for any of my portrait work though I have printed some 5x7's of Ft. Concho/reenactors with very pleasing results.

I'd recommend the Epson R300 for serious work.

I have the HP PSC1315, and it does quite well, even with the basic color cartridge. I can't afford to upgrade. AAMOF, I just bought it a couple months ago. :)

Jim,

Can you let me know about how many 8X10 prints can be made with a set of ink on Canon Photo Paper Pro at the highest quality setting? I am most seriously considering the i9900.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,

It is really hard to determine how many prints you can get from a set of inks because I will usually go through 2-3 cartridges of the Photo Magenta and Photo Cyan before I run out of one of the other colors.

If I had to guess it would be about 30. I print 13x19 too so they usually get mixed in with the other count.

I use Canon Paper but I use third party inks. I can get the ink in bulk at a 10th of the cost of Canon and there is absolutely no difference in color rendition at all.

I get the Canon paper at 50% of retail so that is why I chose to use it rather than third party. A very good third party paper to use with the i9900 is Ilford Pearl. They provide printer profiles for their paper online.
