The speed is okay, and I would think it would be okay for fares and such.

one thing that may draw me to the Epson...I have a 5200 that uses 4 color ink and some of those cartridges look similar, but knowing Epson they are probably different.....I've always had better luck with Epson and HP...the few times I've gotten a Canon printer, I had to take them back.....but I do hear a lot of good about the new Canons

Oh something else I forgot to mention, there's a hi-speed mode where the printer prints in both directions. I haven't used that mode yet since I'm not too concered with the speed of the printer.

I'm about to pick one up tomorrow myself if I can find one at work. Just wanted to know your thoughts on choosing the 1800 over the 2400, if it was anything else but price guiding the decision. Thanks man!

Mostly price. I wanted to stay within the $500 range (more importantly, my wife wanted me to stay within the $500 range). There were 2 other things that kinda helped me lean the R1800 way over the R2400, first, not having to switch ink cartridges everytime I switch media type and second, the Ultrachrome Hi-gloss is a proven ink. The K3 ink, although promissing, are pretty new and you just never know if there will be any trouble out of the box.
For the little runs of printing I do, the R1800 is fine. Is the R2400 a nicer printer? Well for $300 more I hope so, but the R1800 is better than anything I've ever owned. No buyers remorse here.

evil4blue
Thank you very much for this very detailed review from an owner of the Epson R1800. This helps with giving me a choice now between this one and the 2400 (anyone want to do a similar review :D )
Hopefully this gets a sticky to stay towards the top until a review section is made.

Amen. You swayed me to the 1800, after I found out the price I was quoted at HCE for the 2400 was a few hundred off the mark  . I've played with the one I grabbed from work a little tonight, and Im more than impressed, coming from a little R320 and a PIXMA 5000 before that. Only complaint I have is the first few prints have dimples from the paper feed rollers.

I appreciate that you've only just got it, but have you (or anyone else) had any problems with nozzles clogging after not using it for a while?
I had an Epson some years ago (like, 1996) and if it wasn't used daily it clogged so badly it was pretty much worthless. I said I'd never buy another one but now I'm wondering if they fixed the issue.......... :?:

I had the same problem on my Photo 820, and was very nervous about buying the Photo 1280. But I'm happy to report that I've had no nozzle clogging issues with the 1280!

Knock on wood, no clogs so far. The only reports I've seen of clogging on the R1800/2400 has been with 3rd party inks. I haven't even exhausted my first set of inks so I can't say I'll be looking into a CIS or Refills anytime soon.
I did have a small problem with the Cyan not primming correctly at first, but that's been worked out and the system has been preinting like a champ.
I have been printing everyday, so far, so I guess I wouldn't see any clogging because the ink head has stayed moist (haha, moist, the dirtiest non-dirty word in the english language).
One thing I have noticed, yellows are a little weaker than the other colors. This was pointed out in a review I read, but I can't tell if its the pigment or that the density is set too low. I guess if could turn up the yellow in my files or adjust the paper profiles accordingly.

evil4blue - where were y ou when I needed a review? :-)
couple weeks ago I was in the market for a printer and finally gave in. So far I'm very happy with my R1800. Your comment regarding yellow ink is interesting since I'm seeing the opposite. What paper do you use? Yellow is strong on epson-double sided matte. With Moab Entrada 300-bright paper I had to dial Yellow in Photoshop (Hue/Saturation->Yellow) way way down to -12.
btw I use moab's profile in ps and turned off profile in printer settings.

Yellow looks low on both EPGPP and Inkjetart's Micro Ceramic Luster. Not out of whack low, but noticeable. All the other colors appear dead on to my monitor. Mind you, I'm using the canned profiles provided by both companies.
The prints are totally acceptable, but I hate when I know something isn't right...it keeps me up at night.
Have you tried any B&W's yet? Ilford Smooth Pearl gives me the best neutral grays in daylight. The Inkjetart paper gives me a more sepia type B&W. I'm not B*tching, becasue I new this would be a though printer to get great B&W prints from, but I'm in the testing mode and would like some input on this particular topic.

***Update #2***
I just finished another session of prints. This time I waited 3 days to print and left the printer on during that time. The first thing the printer did was a quick head cleaning. I guess the printer has an internal clock and bases head cleanings on that. If I print on consecutive days, the printer doesn't do these head cleanings prior to printing.
I'm printing exclusively through Qimage and I love it. My prints are sharp, smooth, and color matched. I noticed I get better color match if I set the relative columeteric setting rather that the perceptual. I'm also in love with the Ilford Smooth Pearl. This paper is better then any of the others I used, including the Epson papers. My color prints are outstanding and I'm very happy with the cool neutrals of the B&W's.
I'd like to see people's experiences with the R2400. If that printer is really $300 better than the R1800...whoa nelly!
