Moab and other printing papers - 10-02-2005, 02:02 PM

I have a Canon i560 printer, its not the best, but hey, its what I can afford. I have ordered some of the Moab Kayenta and Entrada papers. I have been using either plain old paper, or Printworks Matte photo paper. I like the way the Printworks looks with Black and White, and it does ok with color as well.

Suggestions? Anyone used Moab papers? Anyone care?

I looked at the Kayenta and the Entrada to print 13x19 but the price scared me away. Instead I'm using Canon Photo Paper Pro PR-101. The Canon paper looks good. When I say I looked at Moab, I mean I looked at the price not a sample. So, when you get some printed out, let us know what you think.

I like the Ilford papers. They are very sturdy and very affordable.

I don't print at home much, but I got the Ilford Gallerie at Sam's for about $21 for a 100 sheet box.

WHen I have printed at home, I've been very pleased with the results - and they offer printer profiles for a lot of printers.

I'll have to run over to Sam's this week, I am out of paper other than regular inkjet stuff.

Thank you. I am getting 100 sheets of the 8.5x11 Kayenta and 50 sheets of the 190 gsm Entrada. I hope it likes my Canon i560.

Good luck. I really am impressed with their paper, but I have their profiles to help with color accuracy. You may need to build a profile for your canon since Moab didn't already do it.

Unfortunately, paper profiling requires the purchase of some software and possible some hardware, if you want to do it yourself.

There are companies/people that will build you a custom profile for anyware from $50-100, but unless your getting paid for your work it may not be worth it.

I would suggest buying a sample pack of their paper and just print to it like you'd normally do. If the result are acceptable, move on. If not, then explore other options.

I've been luck in that most paper companies are building profiles for the Espon printers. I have yet to build a custom profile, but I have tweaked a few with an ICC editor.

People get hung up on color accuracy, IMO, unless your doint graphic design or commercial work, you should just use what looks best to you and not worry to much about everything else.

Murph,

Glad to see you had a good experience with Moab. The Entrada is a great line of paper.

Moab also makes a glossy and satin finish which are reall nice, JIC you like printing on that type of stock.

Out of curiosity, is that Canon dye or pigment ink? Both my current printers are pigment inks so I had been wondering how that paper faired with dye inks.

The Canon inks are dye inks. I love the matte finish papers. I bought both my i560 and Lupe's before I was into inkjet printing. I would some day like to get an Epson though.

another moab paper user here.

I'm using Entrada double sided 300 gsm for my portfolios. there's some issue with flaking - the ink came off leaving tiny white spots on the print. I also found that my r1800 putting out excessive yellow. Other than that I'd pick this particluar paper over epson double sided matte.
