Does anyone know if you can rent an event type photo printer for a short period ?
I'd need to evaluate the rental cost vs. purchase, etc.

Tom - have you looked at Imaging Spectrum? You didn't mention what type of printer you are interested in, but they have various dye sub models for rent. Here is a link:

Here's my story.
Last year I did an event at a store where I took photos of owners and their pets ( stop laughing ).
It went very well, except we used the printer provided by the client.
An 8X10 took several minutes to print out.

I need to get a quick 8X10 in the hands of the owner.

Right now I am working with the client, but they want me to solve the printing problem.

I have a Canon I9900 that I am thinking of hooking up to my laptop. I don't know yet what the print time would be, but it would have to be faster than what we had last year.

I'm open to any ideas.

I have a 9900 also, and the print time for an 8x10 for me is no faster than what you have already experienced.
