Cool Custom Printer Profiles - 04-30-2009, 12:35 PM

The first 4 entries in a GOOGLE search for custom profiles turns up 4 companies offering profles at $35/each, plus or minus depending on the number of profiles bought.

Does anyone have experience buying profiles online? Does anyone here have the know how and tools to make profiles for me? Cheap? I'll pay the online prices if I decide to do it.

Thanks!

Bueller?

Bueller?

Anybody?

I guess nobody buys custom printer profiles. Does that mean your printers and paper are perfectly matched? Or you build your own profiles? Or you don't care and send everything out?

Renae?

I use the Hahnemühle and Red River profiles for the specific paper I use. But sometimes on the Red River the standard Epson profile for the media setting is a little better than the RR provided profile.

Wayne,

I was going to talk to you Saturday about this.

From what I see, the profiles are available from the maker, for free.

What is it you are looking for ?

The profiles are available for some printer/ink/paper combinations from the printer manufacturers (HP for HP pringting on [generally] HP papers with HP inks) or from the paper manufacturers (e.g., Moab) but not for all combinations - - usually, the only HP printer included is teh 9180. So if you use an HP C6180 printer with Vivera inks (like I do) but want to print on Moab Entrada Brite 190 paper rather than HP Premium Plus paper, neither HP nor Moab has a profile for that combination.

But If I were willing to spend $35, I could print the profiling targets on my printer on the Moab Entrada Brite 190 paper, send them to a profiler, and have a profile made for it, which would eliminate some of the randomness in the printing output that I currently get - - for example, printing B&W but getting a red undertone to the print on some paper. I just need to get my common combinations profiled and stick to them.

So Wayne thought (speaking for you, Wayne, and I think it is a good thought), why pay some annonymous person the money to make the profiles - - perhaps there is someone here in Houston on the forum who could do it and we could support a local business.

Yes, I think I was thinking that. Or perhaps we would get some feedback from a satisfied customer of one of the online services.

Westley hit the nail on the head: A custom profile for an orphan printer and a very small selection of paper.

Tom,
I bought all of Red River's sample paper. Downloaded all of their profiles. Tried Epson profiles too. I wasted a lot of paper and ink and came up with zip. Bad prints. Since then my Epson 1280 died. I was thinking of trying the Red River paper with my HP printer and a custom profile. However, I think I used all of the paper I liked. Guess it's time to buy some more RR paper.

I think it may be worth asking over on the LF forum as well... I have the names and instructions for several on-line servies that do the profiling work, but I would prefer to put money in a comrade's pocket ... supporting an on-line service is worthwhile, too.
