Review: Avenger 40" C-Stand with Grip Arm Kit and removable base (A2030DCBKIT)

The Avenger 40-Inch Detachable Base C-Stand with Grip Kit (Black) was added to my lighting setup and is used along with my Giottos LP160 stands and a few Smith-Victor stands. I have used it with my Lastolite 24x24" EzyBox

Summary:

I bought this C-Stand to give myself more flexibility when positioning lights. I really like my Giottos LP160s but you are fairly limited. I used them with umbrella brackets which allowed me to tilt the softbox or umbrellas, but I couldn't position them in ways that I wanted, especially overhead, without the stand interfering with shooting angles. It can be especially difficult in the limited space I often have to work. With this C-Stand and grip kit I can easily position the light in just about any way I can think of, and wouldn't hesitant to suspend the softbox directly over the subject if I wanted.

Function:

This thing is big, and does not fold up very far. The feet are removable, and I believe other optional feet can be purchased. Minimum height is 4.4', but if you need something solid you can't go wrong. The boom arm also gives you a huge range of positioning options, so it is easy to have a light far overhead or right off the floor. The grips are extremely solid and have no issues at all in supporting the 24x24 ExyBox and the flash, with battery back and radio trigger.

Build quality is very good. My only concern is with the black coating. I am not sure yet, but I think it is a heavy duty paint and not a powder coat. I opted for the black over the chrome because I was concerned about reflections off the stand in my small workspace.

I highly recommend getting the Avenger E650 6" PIN w/ COLLAR to use along with it. The pin allows umbrella brackets and similar hardware to be attached.

The Verdict:

This thing is SOLID. I really enjoy using it over my other light stands. However, I have not tried to take it on the road yet. It may be best suited for studio work since it is much heavier than most stands, but the working flexibility is so great it may be worth the hassle for certain jobs. I am very happy with the purchase, and if the need arises I would consider getting a second one.
