I think that I'll be waiting to see just how well this product plays out in the hands of the public before purchasing. I'm suspicious of new products - and what bothers me was the initial cheap "potential" pricing of the product to now see it fall exactly in line with the price of the PW. It certainly promises a couple of nice features - but time will tell.

Hey Rob-

This is Kevin King - the guy behind the RadioPopper. I've become friends with a few people from TexasPhotoForum here - it's a great place. I've actually discussed this with Abel, and once we kick off production for real (hopefully in the next couple weeks) we plan to become paid sponsors here, and on several other forums.

I’m just a regular photographer myself and I owe much of my own success to forums like this. I’ve had my hands full getting the production details in line, but once that’s running smooth my focus will shift to the user base. We’ll be offering some discounts to forum users and may possibly organize a group buy.

Mike -

I think you may have mis-read some of the product info. We’re actually working up two entirely different products which has caused a bit of confusion as there are admittedly very few details out yet.

The first and primary product is the RadioPopper P1 which will transmit ETTL data via radio while using your existing Canon and Nikon flashes. That product will be priced at $175 and that price hasn’t changed since initial release of the figures. We feel this is quite reasonable given this product more closely suits the specific needs of event and lifestyle photographers, and will be the only product on the market allowing true ETTL / iTTL functionality via radio.

The second product is a spin off we’ve called the RadioPopper Jr. - this will be a super simple manual radio trigger that we plan to release in Summer 2008. No frills but built using reliable and high quality technology. We are going to price that product as close to $25 as possible. That’s by no means a guarantee - it’s a target. At any rate, it’ll be very affordable and it’ll be reliable. That unit will not support any of the ETTL functions, it’ll just trigger your slave flash in manual mode like other products currently on the market.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

Anyway, this is a very exciting time for us and things are moving along. I’m hoping to roll out a major release of new information very soon as soon as the last details are wrapped up for the production process. We’ll put out product photos, diagrams of use, the owner’s manual, and we’ll release some actual units to a few reviewers that can report back on their own about real world use of the product.

I can hardly wait for some real-world reports on the functionality of the Jr.

You just never know who is monitoring your threads on TPF.

Kevin
Thanks for the clarification. I think that you are moving to the next step in flash communications and you will have a tremendous success. I'll be watching here for release info. etc.

Yeah, as long as Kevin doesn't mind a random tooth mark here and there from the occasional tiger chewing on them (grin).

Kevin -

Yes, thanks - that does clear things up! I was confusing the two products as you said. Good price point for the Jr. and the P1 with ETTL via radio and a ~similar price to the PW line does certainly raise the bar.

Again, nice to hear directly from the source - thanks for responding.
(Man! Wouldn't it be nice to get that kind of direct response from Canon?!? )

Kevin,

Can you give us any more info as to when you think you will be shipping? I am in need of wireless triggers and I sure would like to buy a couple of your smaller units instead of pocket wizards.

Paul-

I hope we'll be shipping by the end of January. I should know by the end of this week if we'll be able to make that or not. We've got our pre-production prototypes coming back from manufacturing this Thursday morning. If they check out and everything is perfect, we'll start production the following week. If anything isn't working properly - it's back to the board shop for tweaks and another run, and another 2 weeks.

Hopefully we'll get it right the first time around. This will be the first time manufacturing them sized down to actual customer units with all the same exact parts as customer units will contain, using the automated assembly and all.

Let's everyone cross our fingers and pray and do whatever we need to do. Next Friday I'll either be in a very good mood or I won't. lol.
