RP with ST-2's Ratio - 04-03-2008, 03:58 PM

Wondering if Kevin or anyone could share the knowledge whether RP will work with Canon St-2 Ratio capability and/or grouping more than 2 flashes or not.

I currently have ST-2 and 2 580EX , and itching to order the RP

thanks all

Isn't the idea of the radio popper to rid us of needing the ST-E2 since the RP range is much more?

I think, If I understand the technology - that it takes the IR signal the ST sends or a 580ex sends and converts it to a radio RF signal transmits it to the receiving Radio Popper and that radio popper takes the RF signal and converts it back to IR - this way you don't loose the use of ETTL. The whole reason for the Radio Popper - so you can use ETTL without having to have line of sight and it can transmitter further distances.

If I'm wrong about this I appoligize but that was how I understood it.

Short answer:
Yes you will require the ST-E2. Yes, you can do ratios and groups.

Long answer:
The Radiopopper does not have the capability to work independently. It will require a broadcast signal. Something to create the e-TTL/i-TTL signal. The RP unit will read that information and broadcast it to the receiver. With that said, if you can do groups through normal e-TTL/i-TTL signals, then yes the RP units will transmit that signal.

Ah thanks for the inputs, I had thought that since RP uses single channel It does not have the function of differentiation two flashes ratio set by the ST-2.
So with E-ttl I can still use manual and meter the background and let the flash works its magic with 2 flash

Hey Jason, just saw this. Yes, you can still trigger the flash via IR. I would position the flash with the RP unit further away or in the back. Then just treat it as normal and shoot.
