sunset location - 11-02-2009, 09:11 AM

Hi everyone! I am new to San Antonio and I love to shoot weather and clouds. I live in north central San Antonio. I have already been to Eisenhower Park observation tower and it is a great spot to shoot a sunset, however it is a long walk to get there and you have to sit on the railing of the tower to see over the trees. I am wanting to explore new places to be able to shoot lightening and advancing storm fronts. Also I am looking for any derelict buildings downtown or anywhere in S.A. that is relatively safe to be at alone. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

There are two buildings over by where i live.
Right off 1604 and Braun Rd. (North bound) they have just built a strip mall, but sitting in between 1604 and the strip mall there are two old wooden buildings that are falling apart. The only downside is that they are fenced off. I have just told my wife two days ago that I plan on jumping the fence with some of my gear to take some images at sunset. At this time of day the sun falls directly into the open doors/windows. I think that some of these shots would look really cool for some portraits but, alas, the fence does present a problem for clients (mentally and physically).
I think it should be safe cause of all the traffic in this area as well as the businesses.

I wish I had something for you but I don't. You might want to travel out the 281 past all the new construction to find some open spots for the weather and clouds.

I didn't even think about that... I live near there. Might have to go and check it out.

Donna, I was out that way 2 months ago and found the scenery very nice. Although
landscapes are not my strong point.
David, if you ever want someone to tag along let me know...

Hey thanks everyone for your quick replies! Doublydan, that sounds cool! I'll go with you and check out those buildings you were talking about if you want. I am always up for an adventure and if I can shoot something, even better! I really like clouds in a sunset. They add such a unique dynamic and so much depth, and the whole sky keeps changing for the better as the sun sets. Seeing as this week there is supposed to virtually no clouds in the sky I am looking forward to a day right before a cold front comes, maybe this Sunday or Monday. But, none the less, I would like to check the place out to get a feel for what the view is like and how long it takes me to get there from my apartment. Let me know when would be a good time and lets check it out. Just email me at blkd0t@yahoo.com. That would be the easiest way to get in touch with me. Thanks for your help and looking forward to meeting up!
David

As far as I am concerned we can go any day of the week. Sunset may be the best time but with the time change I will have to determine what that is... traffic may also be a factor with Braun Rd. being a PITA to circumvent. So think about arriving a little earlier.

I literally live less than 5 mins away so I can go most days of the week, unless my wife has class late that day...cause I have two sons.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you two (and any others that are interested) let me know what is best for you.

So what do your schedules look like?

Just to be clear David, there is a lot of development going on around here and the hills off to the west are barely visible. You had asked about the buildings and that is why I responded with my suggestion. Twenty minutes (the way I drive) to the west (Medina Lake) area has lots of hills and some fall trees that may interest you as well. When a front comes in the hills should provide you with plenty of images and maybe some cool panoramas.

I just checked accuweather.com and sunset is around 5:48 (today). So expect something like that in the next couple of weeks.
Traffic in this area at this time is absolutely horrible, so if that is a problem keep that in mind while setting the date.
Maybe Friday or the weekend would be better.

I forgot that I asked about the buildings too! LOL! I must have had clouds in my brain or the lack of them lately! Ok, so traffic sucks there at sunset. What are you two ( you and Donna or (Skele), the lady who also replied) doing right now? I am almost up to no good so I am free to explore! I know it is short notice but I thought I would put it out there.
