It's been really hot this summer, and now with minimal sun flares, it seems like it's cooler. I, too, cannot come up suggestions of places to go stand in front of to get my fix in pressing the shutter button. All this gear, (not really a lot), and no place to go. Having the time off to do any photo shoots is not looking good either.
I have given thought to heading out toward Bandera or even Canyon Lake's Hwy 306 (??). There's plenty of landscape, buildings and other stuff to photograph along the way. But, for large groups, that entails lots of stoppages and maybe even the use of a large 13 passenger van to make it memorable.
I don't want to make a professional level outing. KISS means to some, Keep It Simple Stupid. Don't you just want to gather, show off your hardware, and if you have any, your skills or technical knowledge? Yeah, your are going to perspire and get uncomfortable, but fun makes up for the discomfort. Cold drinks, in one form or another, will help, but these are not mandatory. I just want to exercise my gear and artistic abilities.
Anybody recall any parks, or easy-to-access landscapes, cattle farms, ranches, hillsides, old-looking townships, etc that are not too far from SA? Places where we won't meet with Homeland Security officers and the like? I know Murph mentioned Martindale in another thread, but is that all they got there?
A Saturday or Sunday morning for the squeamish is good for me. The wife can bear a few hours of my absence. Don't you just want to put that 5D or D300 to use and PhotoShop some images for upload to the SA forum?
