Yea, it isn't as easy as it looks :)
Some advice: Don't center the face of your subject, fill the frame. You have a lot of empty space at the top of your shots.
Crank up your ISO and open up your aperture as much as you can to get more ambient light. Use rear-curtain sync on your flash. Also, it looks like a popup flash, but if not, bounce your flash to avoid shadows.

I hope that helps. They are still fun photos :)

Don't quit your day job j/k.
Quinces are like mini weddings, they can be pretty tough to shoot. Your shots need better balance between ambient & flash to avoid that "flashy" & "cave" background look.

Trust me, there is no way I would attempt to do this for other than family.

Hey Murph, you did a decent job considering you hadn,t done this type of shooting before.
I do agree with the others in that you might want to try using bounce flash if and when you shoot an event like this again. I usually try a few test shots using bounce flash until I get the result I like. Use someone to test this before shooting your subject. Every venue and place is different.

And dont forget that when using bounce flash you will need ample batteries available since this takes more juice.

Good luck.

Thanks all. Never again (or at least until She Who Must Be Obeyed lays down the law).
