Yeah, once again "Like the forgetful guy I am" I only brought one 8 gig CF Card. Which really bummed me out. Heh... But it was a beautiful day to shoot and attend this event.

Nice shots John!

I've finally uploaded a clip from my video onboard Fat Albert during the show.

It starts right before power for takeoff, through rotation, then a sixty degree climbout and then the pitchover where we reach zero-g.

The time spent with these guys was well worth not shooting the other acts.

Anyway here it is:

My daughter got to meet this man, LTC Richard Cole, Co-pilot of plane #1, flown by Jimmy Doolittle, and one of FIVE surviving Doolittle Raiders. I hope she realizes the honor.

I went today, Sunday, but 12 noon is too late in the day. Just too many people in the way of my favorite aircraft. The early morning would have been better as some of you may have done.

My only complaint is people sitting under the shade of the wings. Makes for a lot work trying to clone them out. The only aircraft type that did not provide any shade was the helicopter. The wings are too narrow. But, then, all those aircraft are parked there for photo ops of civilians (tax payers) alongside the hardware. I recall doing that too.

Did anyone notice how many people had a DSLR? John mentioned that he would be the guy with the camera. Every third person had one. Of course, there were all those cell phones held up in the air taking pictures alongside my DSLR. Wonder how good the picture quality is?

It was a nice time for everyone including me.

That is why I get there at sunrise. All the great shots are to be had at that time. I've learned that this is also the time when chaos is the most and you will virtually get no hassle from anyone and the people by their respective aircraft will usually give you access that you can't get when the show is happening. That's why in images posted you will count minimal people in them. I was more looking to photograph static displays over actual flying aircraft because of the sun angle. The only caveat to all this is that you have to find a way on base prior to the gates opening. My friend is USAF retired and has the car tags to do it.

DSLR's are turning out to be like the Chicken Pox, everyone is going to have it eventually in their life. Because they have one doesn't make them photographers. An event like an airshow is a great experience to see how poorly people use their cameras. I'm not claiming to be flawless but I feel that I am way ahead of the game than most from what I see. Keep shooting and learn from your mistakes.

Here's a couple of mine I put on flickr. I'm way behind. Two Airshows and two other outings in one week has me in a PP hole! I'm not real happy with the second. All of the smokey haze in the air from the show was a problem...

Thanks Toby! Yours looks great too. Maybe next year I can get my lazy butt up and get out there at sunrise. :)

Question Glacier Girl - 11-05-2011, 10:05 AM

One of the main reasons I went down to Randolph from Ft. Worth on Saturday was to see the 'P-38, Glacier Girl'. But I couldn't find her...

Was she there on Sunday!

A couple more from Saturday
