Best locations for the San Antonio Skyline? - 02-04-2012, 06:42 PM

I have a client that has asked for a large panorama of the San Antonio Skyline.

I'm from Austin and am not familiar with the best views.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have lots of favorite places in Austin, but don't know squat about the SA area.

Thanks for any help you may offer.
I did look on the SA locales page, but didn't see much there.

Thanks.

Rob

I was just thinking about that tonight actually. I came up with Bandera. I'm helpful!

We were in San Antonio last night and I was trying my best to spy some decent place to shoot the skyline from. All I could come up with was maybe the top of the Hilton at 410 if you can get up there. I don't know how much of skyline you could get into the picture but I think it would be real pretty if you could incorporate the Quarry into the shot.

Thanks,
It seems there are not many good vantage points for downtown skyline photos of San Antonio. I've spent a few hours looking at many different forums, as well as on Google Earth... and there just are not many opportunities. Hopefully someone will chime in. I'll look into the Hyatt, as well.

Found out where this was taken... a condo/high rise just west of downtown.
I talked to the manager and they charge $250 to use their facility/upper level for photography.

yikes!

Hayes St bridge on near east side works. Rough area, but close in and free.

I've seen some great shots of the Downtown Skyline which looked like they were taken from the UTSA Downtown Campus. I wish I had that photo to show you, but I didn't take it.

Thanks, Dave,

I contacted UTSA last week (I bet I saw the same shots you did). I will be checking that out in the next few weeks... just waiting for a break in the clouds that coincides with my "real job" schedule :-)

Finally found a place. I had to show credentials, insurance, all that jazz... but they were really nice...

I was up on the north side at an apartment complex. The night shot is very clear (doesn't look sharp on the upload to me even though I sharpened it for the web).
These were all multiple shots stiched vertically. It was a glorious sunset that surrounded me on both sides.

Those are nice but the location is not a good spot for my taste. The most interesting buildings in downtown SA are the Transit tower, the old Alamo Nat Bank building and the Tower of the Americas. The view from where you were shooting minimize all three and put a bunch of the worst looking boxes in front of them.

The best skyline I have seen was taken from the top of the Pioneer Flower Mill; it had the three best buildings in the front and from that angle they looked closer together than they really are. Of course when that picture was taken the ugly hotels around the convention center were not built yet, they will mess up any skyline. The last I heard they don't let you up in Pioneer anymore.

The top of Herman Sons or the hotels near it might be good but might be too close for anything but a very wide angle lens. The Wyndham La Cascada might be good but I don't know how easy it is to get in. Any location to the south that is elevated enough would be good, but to the south does not have much that is elevated.
