Time to work on the new home studio. - 04-02-2009, 12:31 PM

So a while back I decided to move all my furniture upstairs since the loft is almost as big as my livingroom and turn the downstairs into a studio. If I wasn't single this would probably not happen. Today I am buying laminate wood flooring to replace all the carpet downstairs. It is about 400-450 sqft I need to replace. To save money I am going to install it myself. It is my first time doing flooring so I may try and get some help. I cannot wait until it is done so I can start using it. I have done some stuff in the past in the living room but the carpet sucks in a studio. I will post up some pics along the way.

Depends on what type of wood floor you chose, but it really isn't that difficult. We watched a friend and his kids to the floors with tape on the back...very easy, but once it's stuck, it's stuck. We laid the kind with glue...it's messy, but you can work with it once it is laid down. Our kids helped us and they did a great job. They could do everything, just needed some guidance at the beginning. Good luck and show us some photos!!

Sounds great. I was planning on setting up a home studio but I ran into a small problem: space. I'm not sure what I'm going to do now.

I've replaced most of the carpet in my house with laminate. My only suggestios are take your time getting started. Usually on a room that takes 6 hours to complete the measuring and laying the first row takes me about 2 hours. Because if you get the first row cut (if needed) and square the rest goes pretty fast. And you might look at DIY web sites. Good luck.

Beware the snap in stuff, it will not stand up to abuse.

I'd offer to help but it would probably take you 3 times as long as if you do it alone!!!

From my experience the snap in stuff has held up without any issues. Maybe my family is just 'light on their feet'. lol

Is this from experience? I have heard they stand-up well even in commercial settings.

My kids both have the snap in style in their homes. It is standing up well. Call me if you need a hand, compound mitre saw, etc.

I have done six rooms with laminate, glue and snap in. Not really that difficult to put down. Glue laminate took more time. But, which ever one you use take your time. Up front planing is the key.

My wife and I put laminate down in our whole house - upstairs and downstairs - about 4 years ago. It looks great, and is holding up very well. Let me know if you need a hand, Allen.

Thanks for the offer to help, I am sure I will take some of you up on that. The flooring should arrive Tuesday or Wednesday. I will probably start on it next Saturday. I do not have a miter saw or other wood working tools. All the tools I have are mechanics tools. I have been thinking of getting a miter saw because i plan on making my own props. I saw a good Dewalt miter saw for $219 at Lowes. I am open to any recommendations you may have as long as it does not involve robbing Fort Knox. J/K

Ok, so the first room is done for the most part. I just need to put on the molding. The first room will be for storage and product photography. The second on is bigger and I plan to tackle it this coming weekend. I will post pics tonight when I get home from work.
