I used to have this lens before I sold the D300 and I really liked it. The trick is getting a sharp copy. I'll check this evening for pics.

I've read about that front focusing issue... that is one of the only things that makes me wonder a bit.

From what I understand... the problem seems to have been worked out over the couple of years of production of the lens though, and that the "newer" models didn't have the same issues.

Other than that.... did you like the speed of "focus" or close to focus. Coming from the world of newspaper journalism and all of the expensive goodies that we had, I have a bit of performance anxiety for the lens. The 70-200 f2.8 is another likely candidate but I like the idea of having more of a "portrait" lens, especially since that Sigma 100-300 f4 or even the f2.8 would be the next stepup sports lens probably.

I never had any issues with the focus speed and I tend to be impatient. The last time I used the lens was at an outdoor evening wedding with very low lighting. It focused correctly on every shot. I know that the 70-200 2.8 can't be beat and I've owned it before but never wanted to use it due to the weight. The 50-150 is pretty compact and worked perfectly for what I needed. Now, if I could find something similar that would work for FF.

I like this lens a lot. It essentially replaced my 70-200 2.8 VR on the D70 thanks to the lightweight form and great image quality.

I rented one and if I decide to stay on a DX sensor, I will likely buy one. It was sharp, focused quickly and quietly. I wish I didn't have to send it back.

The volleyball shot is soft from all of the noise reduction I applied from shooting a D200 at ISO 2000. The dog shot was a test shot after the rental arrived.

Sigma 50-150 2.8 - 02-19-2010, 09:14 PM

I have an older copy (about 4 years old) and have always found it to be sharp on a crop body. It is a close match for a 70-200 2.8 on a full frame where space is an issue.
