Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG Macro (Auto Focus DOA)

This is a discussion on Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG Macro (Auto Focus DOA) within the Sigma forums, part of the SLR Lens Sample Galleries category; I am considering purchasing this lens for a medium zoom. Does anyone have any experience with this lens? Thanks Robert ...

Yes I had one. If you get a good copy it will produce some great images. It will not focus as quick as a Canon. The new version "II" apparently has had some improvements.

I have this Lens! I use it for All my Sprts Photography. Used it this past weekend at Ozzfest also. I love this lens! It is Great! And for 1/2 the price as Cannon, its even better!

I actually had a Gentleman at Arlington Camera, Who uses nothing but Sigma Lenses, tell me that it is not worth the money to buy the Newer Version of this lens. He said that for the Money, the Old style of the lens is Just FINE!

X2 BTW: Don't get caught up in with the "Macro" label. Its mostly marketing-speak.

It also works well with the Sigma 1.4 TC:

I don't want to be viewed as bashing but I bought a new version of this lens and the first time i took it out to shoot soccer the autofocus went out and it was pretty soft at 2.8. I had it repaired which took about 5 wks. maybe I just had a bad copy, but i sold it because I needed reliabity.

That's not bashing. I call that honest reporting. This isn't meant to be a sigma love fest. If there are problems we need to know. I know that many times in the past sigma has been knocked for poor quality control. Mine is tack sharp and I haven't had heard much about QC problems with the new 70-200.

Here are a few examples from my Sigma 70-200 f2.8. The first 2 shots were wide open at f2.8, the second 2 shot at f8. All set on Av mode using a monopod.

I bought the lens yesterday from a local shop. Used it last night shot around 90 frames. It worked great and produced very sharp photos. Went to use it this evening and the auto focus was dead. I will be taking it back tomorrow.

I have the Canon Mount of this lens and I have never had a problem with the auto focus. Leslie had it before I did, and she didn't have a problem with it either. I wonder if its a fluke with the newer version???

Don’t get me wrong, I have many Sigma lenses and this is the first problem I have had. I am not sure this lens was not sold and returned once before I bought it. When I bought it I also bought a UV filter. When I arrived home and went to install the filter, the lens already had one which makes me think it was used. I will give this lens another try from a different dealer because I have never had a problem with Sigma quality before.

I have three Sigma zooms, the 24-70 f/2.8, and the 70-200 f/2.8, and the 28-200 f/3.5-5.6,. Have never had a single problem with any of them. My experience has been the opposite: It ain't normal to have one that hasn't worked right...

Hey....I thought this was a sample image gallery? Shouldn't all this discussion be taken over to the Equipment Talk section?
