Question How do you "bump" a post that has no replies? - 10-06-2009, 12:33 PM

How is an OP supposed to "bump" a post of theirs if the "bump" gets merged with the original, which happens when there are no replies to the post?

agreed, isn't there a time limit on when the forum will merge your post........

i.e. after 1 day no auto merge?

You're probably right, and it's probably in the FAQ come to think of it. Thanks.

The automerge feature was implemented specifically to stop OP from bumping their own threads (in the buy/sell section mostly). This should help keep current threads, well, current and stop those who want to constantly bump for visibility.

But is it ETHICAL to bump your own thread?

If you put something out there for folks to digest and no one wants to comment, who are you to keep putting it in front of them?

You would be surprised how many posts simply go unnoticed for some reason, anything from buy/sell to critique requests. Anyway, I was just wondering.

I understand there was excessive bumping in the buy/sell forum, bordering on abuse. But IMHO this auto-merge "feature" really stinks in the other sub-forums. Not only is it perfectly legitimate to bump something in many cases, but sometimes you may be responding multiple posts in the thread and it's easier to do so with multiple separate replies so that it doesn't get too confusing.

And even in the buy/sell forum it's sometimes legitimate to bump a post. For instance if you change the listing in some signficant way (new info provided, price drop, etc). It doesn't seem unreasonable to me that such a post should cause a bump.

If it's not possible to limit the merge feature to the buy/sell forum, I'd rather see it done away with. You can always enforce the no-bump rule manually in buy/sell.

During the busy time of day, stuff can scroll of the first page of "New Posts" within an hour or so, and that's how a lot of people surf the forum. So I don't think a bump after some reasonable period of time is unreasonable. Bumps can also be useful to remind people about some event as it gets closer, etc.

I believe Abel has responded previously that it was an "all or nothing" option, ie; it can't be done on some sub-forums and not on others.

that isnt the case for a bump at all, a bump isnt to push an unwanted product in some ones face, its to put it back at the top in hopes that the person who is going to buy it, just has not viewed the thread yet

This may be a good time to point out that tic stands for "tongue in cheek."

I understand the feeling, BUT sometimes I think post go into cyberworld and I don't see them until days later. I don't understand how I can miss a thread. I use "New Posts" to see all the stuff since I was last on and if I am at the computer I have it on live view. I know some post have not shown up there. So on occasion, I see nothing wrong with either bumping or requesting one.
