That would be fine if it were not being used for personal attacks, but it is. TPF rightfully does not allow comments that attack people, but the rating system is being used for the same purpose - to attack a handful of people. I have done a little study that I sent to Abel. It is enough to convince me that attacks are happening, but I cannot prove it and I cannot assign blame to the person or persons responsible because I don't have access to enough data, but give me access and I will prove it.

I've been here more than 5 years and 12K posts and I think I've rated a thread 5 times... 3 of which were just now when I was trying to see how it wasn't working. I've lived without it.

Being that I'm the one that is having this problem I have been trying to ignore it for the most part.
It's other members here that it's bothering also.
Funny metaphor---It's not the school I hated it was the principal.

You know it's not the star issue that is bothering me it's not knowing who did it.
Now really think about it. If you spent countless hours out in the field trying to get the perfect picture and want to share it on line it's on here for good.
Now if your a pro photographer and somebody gives you a low rating it's stays that way for many years on this site. What if somebody wanted to hire me down the road to photograph their wedding for example. A non member checks out my work and sees three stars on my thread it's going to make themselves wonder. They are not going to know the difference that it was malicious or if that photographer actually posted a bad picture.
I'm just saying.
Or we can go another route? We can bring up Capt.Tom. Why not just ignore his replies or posts? Oh, that's different right? It's the same principal.

I thought Abel was going to look into this issue. Why hasn't anything been done to correct it? My membership fee is on hold because of this.
He has gotten several request to fix this problem.
Has he PM'd the person that is doing it?
Can someone tell me who is doing this?
That is all I ask.

yes i said i would look into it but quite frankly it was not a major priority... I spent 5 days traveling through Texas when this problem came up... then just got back again last night from traveling to Chicago for 5 days so me being on vacation(s) has held a higher priority. now had the forum stopped working or got hacked then yes, id make time out of my vacation to handle it. for star ratings... not so much.

we're talking about star ratings... theyre completely opinion based. i checked and its not one person making all of the ratings.. its about 4-5 different people total making different ratings on different threads. so to think one person is singling you out is not correct.

what do you want me to do? tell members what their opinions SHOULD BE? uh... no.. i cant do that.

is the rating system messed up. yes it seems it is messed up since only one person can rated a thread. That will be fixed if there is a fix for it. that i am not sure of...

in regards to holding your membership fee... thats fine.. if you dont feel we're worth the $25 then simply dont sign up... its cool. i wouldnt want you to spend it if you didnt feel we were deserving of it. id rather you didnt actually in that case...

Funny, I just tried to rate a thread that had not been rated and I got an error:

i turned off the rating feature until the bug can be fixed. hopefully it will be back up tomorrow

Here's my take:
Sandy your photography has improved leaps and bounds! I would really try not to worry about the rating stars if this happens in the future. I would try to focus more on the supportive comments made by those of us who enjoy your photography and enthusiasm for wildlife and nature.

On the other hand for the person or people responsible for hurting another photographer's feelings, there's no excuse for that sort of thing. We are here to constructively help each other to become better photographers and to further the enjoyment of our hobby.

P.S. Abel, thanks so much for all you do on this absolutely wonderful forum!!

As long as I have been here I haven't ever really paid attention to the ratings. I think it would be just as beneficial to leave it disabled.
