Do photos have to come from an on-line website? - 12-11-2009, 04:44 PM

I've tried posting photos a couple times today. I have the impression when I click the yellow icon that it is looking for a website address. That's fine for my Flickr photos, I guess, but what about the photos that are on my computers? I did see there was a 500kb limit, so I'll have to reduce the size of most shots I want to upload. Can you tell me where on the site there are instructions for uploading photos to posts? The instructions for uploading to my gallery are clear and easy to follow, by contrast.

Steve

when you create the post, go down a bit and click on "Manage Attachments". Then "Browse" and go from there to loacte your image on your computer. The size rules apply to these directly uploaded files and not to images posted as links.

You cannot post images directly if you chose "Quick Reply".

hope this helps.

What Kenw said. But why would you want to post 500MB+ photos? An 800x600 JPEG isn't going to be more than 200-300KB. There is no reason to be posting larger images.

Thanks Ken for helping Stephen out... I do appreciate it.

To build upon what Bill was getting to, I highly suggest that you dont upload images of that size anywhere online since if it is public people can download your hi res file and do pretty much anything they want to it. uploading smaller web sized images wont keep people from stealing them but it will keep people form being able to print them out at various sizes like 20x30" etc...

just food for thought.. thanks!

Guys,
I knew the limit was 500Kb but typed it in wrong and didn't proofread carefully enough.

Thanks for all the help and I look forward to participating on the forum.

I was wondering if someone could help me. I post images to photobucket (and have the free account). No matter what size they are when they are uploaded they show up as snapshot size 3x5ish when linked. I would like to link larger photo's to my threads.

Any thoughts or advice would be great!

Many thanks.

A freebie Picasa account gives you more size flexibility...Ben

Ben:

Thanks. I do not want to download the photo editor as I use Aperture. Is there a way to just use the upload and hosting function?

I'm not sure...

Well, I just tried it from another Google account and it doesn't seem possible to upload without Picasa3...Sorry...Ben

OK, I found it...After installing Picasa3, go to Tools> Configure photo viewer and uncheck "Use Picasa as default photo viewer"...That should give you what you want......Ben

From PhotoBucket's own FAQ's:

Why is the image that I just uploaded smaller than the original?

The image you uploaded may have been resized to your default upload size.
To set your default upload size:
  1. Log into your Photobucket account
  2. Click the more options link in the Upload panel.
  3. Select a display or file size that is equal to, or larger than, that of the images you want to upload.
Notes:
  • If an option is greyed out, it is not available for your Photobucket account type.
  • When you select a larger size than your images, it prevents resizing upon upload.
  • If you use the file size options, the file size of the original image takes precedence over the display size, and any display size is accepted as long as the file size is less than your file size choice.
  1. Click the Save button to save your changes.
Images already in your account are not modified, but the new setting is used for all new image uploads.

Good Luck.

Many thanks... I spent 30 minutes trying to figure that one out yesterday, with no luck.
