Question Can we add another showcase? - 06-10-2010, 01:39 PM

Specifically for pets please?

In the hierarchy of photographic fields it goes like this:
#1 Brides
#2 Babies
#3 Pets

We've got two of the three covered, but pets is lacking.

Personally, I don't feel like my pet portraits belong in "Nature & Wildlife" even though they are animals. And the "Portraits" section is generally for people, soooooo, hence my request.

Thanks for any consideration.

And we still have no "Commercial Photography" showcase. For food and other more commercial oriented photography. I've been lobbying for that for years. But apparently most people here seem to shoot weddings, seniors, and model portraits and there's not enough interest for the advertising side.

I, for one, would love to see more of this type of photography. Although I'm a portrait/headshot guy, I really like well done commercial photography.

A "Pets" section would be good too because people adore their pets and pictures of them.

I've thought we needed a pet section for years... there hasn't been a whole lot of commercial work posted here to clog up another area and I don't think having a section for that would mean more would get posted..... but pets and other domesticated animals sure seem to dominate the Nature and Wildlife section a lot of the time.

I know that I a) don't bother half the time because I don't like posting it in the General showcase or no category seems fitting enough, and/or b) i just post on photocamel.com instead. Especially if I have a commercial related question.

But then we have an Underwater forum that gets a post about once every month or two.

No one works their whole life to get the chance to take a picture of a cat.

I hope to shoot the Olympics, the World Cup and Super Bowl before I die.

Thomas, pet photography is the fastest growing niche in the photographic industry. Pay attention!

That doesn't mean it is bigger than sports or corporate. It is still just a niche.

http://helmiflick.com She's registered here, but I don't think she comes around. She is also a dear friend and did a lot of the necessary butt kicking to me when I was getting back into photography about 7 years ago.... And she's worked to get where she is... regularly gracing Cat Fancy magazine and getting the opportunity to shoot some of the most exotic cat breeds in the country.

Usually you have a well informed opinion, but here, you have no idea what you're talking about. Not just Pet Photography, but the Pet Industry in general is one of the fastest growing "niche" industry out there. The 30 second ad space for the Westminster Dog Show sells in numbers that are similar to sports events... and growing.

And as far as photography of pets goes... when a hobbyist first gets their camera, the turn it to the available subjects... which are usually (in order) Flowers, Their Kids, Their Pets.

And my opinion is correct. Pet photography is definitely a big growth area. But it definitely does not exceed corporate/commercial or sports photography. There is just no way.

I'm not saying pet photographers are bad or less of photographers. It just isn't anywhere near as big an industry as sports photography. No where near.
Team and Individuals for all the sports of all ages
HS/college/pro/olympics
AP/getty/uspw/icon/south creek/etc
All the great little league/tournament shooters for all the different sports

The industry just isn't anywhere near as big.

Table Tennis is one of the most played sports in the world with hundreds of millions if not a billion people participating annually. The Table Tennis industry isn't beating out the NFL any time soon.

A pet section would be kind of cool. It gets my vote, for what ever that's worth.
