And I would argue that going back days and weeks later to pull your opinion from a thread drastically changes the experience of the board as that entire thread now lacks the context it once had. A few minutes to edit a typo or to zero out your post is more than enough time to reconsider what you said. If you have the wherewithal to say it, leave it or just don't post it at all. I get what you're saying, I really do. I also think it's lame when people do that. However, it's perfectly acceptable behavior to go back and edit a comment. Just because others "don't like it" doesn't really have any relevance. I "think it's lame" when people sit in the seats right by the Southwest gate then stand up and are all of a sudden "in line" once they start boarding, but this is perfectly acceptable behavior.

What we are discussing are subtle points of "forum etiquette". A laissez-faire moderating style is generally more desirable than the alternative.

So you've never said anything in the heat of the moment that you later regretted and wished you could correct?

This isn't a "heat of the moment" deal, it's a photography forum. If you (meaning everyone) get so wound up that you post something that you later regret maybe it's time to push away from the keyboard from time to time. I have, on several occasions, been ready to hit the submit button but thought better of it and just closed the browser. All the posts I have made still stand and if you care to go back over my five years or so here you won't see a single "period" post. You will see some edited typo posts but no period posts...

And if you (meaning everyone) do post something stupid in the heat of the moment all the better to make it stand, then maybe next time you'll think twice because you will see your actions have consequences. A little accountability goes a long way.

For those of us that attach images, that would suck. You could not edit or remove your photo.

If that becomes a rule I would no longer attach photos.

I would also like enough lead time to remove what I have attached.

I understand you can host elsewhere and link here. I don't.

The kind of behavior that you are referring to happens in every forum everywhere, regardless of the subject matter. It's more about human psychology and the anonymity of the internet and less about photography and its supporting information.

It's good to see that you've -chosen- to use this forum in that specific way. Some may choose to model their posting style after your chosen behavior, but others may not. These examples of your own chosen personal behavior have no relevance to the permanent changing of the forum software though.

Aside from this "." argument though, there are some significant reasons not to make this change :

* the ability to change the price in a for-sale item would be lost
* the ability to add people to the attendee list in a meetup post would be lost
* the ability to change an attached photo in a post would be lost

It seems like a lot to give up just to enforce an opinion of forum etiquette on everyone else.

Yes, perhaps these days it is too much to expect people to stand behind what they say/post.

Yes it is. You expect far too much.

Put me in the same camp... You can't "unsay" something in person, and I don't believe you should have the wanton ability to "unpost" something you stupidly and regrettably said on a message forum. It isn't like that "Post Reply" button clicks itself, after all.

No, you can't. But in person you have the ability to apologize, retract your statement, and move one.

Forums transform your words into tangible things that can be printed, quoted, reposted, and passed around for the rest of your photographic career. Compare it to your wife pulling out the 'Remember when you did this' statement every time you get into an argument..... not so fun anymore is it?

And one would have that opportunity as well here. Simply go back and quote your idiotic post and add your apology. People may even respect you more for taking responsibility for your words and actions versus thinking you are a coward by deleting your offending remarks.

Engage ones brain before saying it or typing it. Not so hard is it? And if one does say or do something and gets called on it, own up to it. Are they hoping that by deleting a previous idiotic post they are able to claim they never said it? What does that make them? I know what it makes them in my book...
