Constructive Criticism Rule Discussion - 09-06-2011, 09:59 AM

Someone brought this up in another thread, and I was catching up on Scott Kelby's 'The Grid: Live' in which critique was discussed on episode 21.

If you label your photo threads with an NC, why are you posting the images? How do you want people to respond, if at all?

If you label your photo threads with CC, what sort of critique are you expecting to hear? Will you find yourself justifying everything about your photo(s) that others - you may or may not respect their opinion - suggest you could have done differently?

Are you just looking for someone to say, "Love it!" or "Great shot!"?

Discuss photo critiques. What are your thoughts?

I love the ones that say CC, but then specify they are open to good feedback. Um, what if your photo needs help? Constructive is the key part of CC, and I think a lot of people forget that. I think the majority of this forum is rather helpful when critiquing, even if it's just "I don't know much about lighting, but something about this feels wrong". (I do that a lot.)

As for the NC, a lot of people if they want to post more than three photos have to select it, and others want to share a photo, but they don't particularly care about what other people think. If I see a NC and I'm not a fan, I don't say anything at all. If I like the image, I'll usually say what I like or which of a series I like best.

I feel that a lot of users post a photo intending to get feedback, but mistakenly leave the NC/CC label on "NC" (the default).

NC is still open to comments and questions, but I view CC as wanting real in depth thought and criticism. The reason CC threads are limited is to allow people to give good feedback on a few images instead of bombing them with 20+ and wanting thorough comments.

When browsing any of the sections within the main Showcase Section you will notice threads that will have a CC: prefix in the title. These threads have been posted with the intent of receiving a Constructive Critique. All other threads noted with a NC: prefix are seeking No Critiques and are just being posted to share their photos although general commenting is fine. Detailed critiques are not to be given on those threads.

I wish "CC" was default. I always forget and have to change it after I post.

But, if you say you don't like a photo that is listed as NC, the response is almost always "thanks, but no one asked you".

This was basically the point that they were making "The Grid"; the internet is flooded with people who can't seem to not comment on photos, most often in a very unconstructive way. If you can't constructively critique it, there's no need to say anything at all.

True. I catch myself on that one sometimes. If I do really like one I will post, although I try to say WHY.

Screw that.
I want a white and black section.

Then I say the brown and heavily tanned can walk anywhere from a black and white section, or a white and black section.

Except those from orange skin, unless you're an oompa-loompa, then that's just not cool.
