New event dates!!!!

Okay it took some time but I finally got the dates for the George Washington Birthday Festival. They are as follows:

1). Princess Pocohontas Pageant Feb.12th
2). Stars and Stripes Airshow Feb 13th 11:00am---4:00pm
3). Jalapeno Festival Feb 18th(5:30pm)-19th(1:00pm) :D
4). Anheuser-Busch Washington's Birthday Parade Feb.19th(9:00am). :)


There are other events scheduled but these are the most popular. Hope some of you can make it, It would be nice to meet the faces that make this forum so great.

WOW! Are they still doing that? That event has been going on in Laredo for a loooong time.
I lived there for a year and a quarter in 1961 & 62. I was a trainee for the McCrory 5&10 which used to be about 2 or 3 blocks from the bridge.
Washington's Birthday was one of the biggest Holiday (Mexican) Seasons of the year. Excluding Christmas of course.
I don't know about now, but back then they would open the border so that ANYBODY from the Mexican side of the river could come across. Green Cards not required. And boy did they come!!! Some of those people that came in the store would make the inhabitants of the poorest ghetto in the US look like millionaires. There were 2 days a year they would do this. Washington's Birthday and Cinco de-Mayo.
Washington's B'day was a really big colorful deal. A big parade right down through the center of town with marching bands and floats, and everything! A junior Rose-Parade of sorts. Really something to see. The store would close while the parade was going on, and all of the employees, and families, would go up on the roof and watch it from there!

yes, the event is still going on. This year is the 250th aniversary of the founding of Laredo. I have heard many stories like yours of how the town just completely shuts down for the pararde. They quit letting everyone in with out a visa/greencard years ago. I must confess that this is the first year that I will be able to enjoy some of the events, I'm usually working when they are going on. I am especially looking forward to the parade and the Jalapeno festival. I am going to refer you all to the main website of the GWB celebration so I don't screw up the dates. The website is www.wbcalaredo.org. As far as directions to laredo, get on I-35 and go south until you hit mexico. Hope to see some of you there
