When Saving JPGs to post... Choose SAVE AS - 10-15-2006, 07:56 PM

When it comes time to saving photos for general web use and/or posting here on the forum I'd like to suggest you use the Save As feature instead of the Save For Web option.

Many people use the Save For Web option but I feel it strips the files of much needed background info. If you use the Save As option and then select the JPG format sure the files become slightly larger but all of the EXIF data is retained.

What good is EXIF data you say? Say for instance if I posted this photo here....

Since I already have Opanda's EXIF Viewer Utiliy (http://www.opanda.com/) installed on my machine all I need to do is simply right click on the image.... and select the VIEW EXIF item.

The window below will then appear giving me all of the vital information associated with the image like camera, make and model, shutter speed, focal length, aperture etc etc

I think this information is great to have available when browsing other people's photographs etc... I know I use it very often.

Anyways... just a suggestion...

Amen to that!
I really like checking EXIF info on pics.
Plus when you use "save as" I think the pictures look better then "save for web". But that may just be in my head.......

Nice shot of Michael Wilton, Abel.
Was the Mindcrime II music as good as the original?

As for your suggestion, I tend to agree.
While one person's settings may or may not help me in a similar situation, due to the wide variety of cameras and their quirks as well as post-processing effects, at least if everyone left their exif intact we'll be saved from all the replies asking "what were your settings?"
That's why I have Opanda, too.

Unfortunately, there are some programs that strip exif no matter what.
NeatImage is one example.

Uploading to Photobucket (which is what I almost always do) also seems to strip the EXIF.

keith... im not sure... i didnt stick around for the whole show... this tour they played the entire first mindcrime album, took and intermission and then played the newer mindcrime album in its entirety. we had to leave at intermission so i missed their newer stuff...

Michael Wilton is cool but man i still miss DeGarmo!

edit.: im a big fan of the original mindcrime album... this was like my 3rd time seeing them live. heres a link to more images if youre interested:

I have never been a fan of "save for web". I have always used "save as" which gives you more control for the end product

Opanda works on the same file posted to Photobucket, but not on the same file here. The other Exif viewer that works with "Properties" reads it here though. Something is getting rearranged or added to the files posted here. (And I don't have the Photobucket strip-exif problem ever).

I have that other EXIF viewer (the Properties one), and Abel's shot has no EXIF info available. Maybe I should just get Opanda...

I didn't see the concert but I can answer that with an emphatic "NO".

Me too. I also miss the old Geoff Tate before he turned into a wussified sell-out. :)

Cool shots. Mindcrime I is probably my single favorite album of all time. I saw their tour last year when they played Mindcrime I, it was pretty decent but not nearly as good as when I saw it back on the Building Empires tour.

OKK this is really pushing the OLD brain cells.. LOL.. I down loaded.. Opanda.. and have ..been trying to figure it out.. My biggest.. dilemma..is when I save.. an image.. I am challenged with settings . When I saved it as.. Save for web... It had an easier format for me, I use Photoshop Elements 4 for editing, I do like this Opanda for info since I so rarely remember what my settings were on my camera. Good thing I have.. a day off.. work.. might take me that long to figure it out...Janice

If anyone wants to use the program that I use that takes and puts a nice frame around my image with the EXIF data embedded into it then you can download it here.

It is called Ditto. It works directly with Bridge and can take a RAW image and take it straight to web size with the EXIF data intact. I don't know when the last time was that I used Save for Web

IT's FREE!!!!!

enjoy

Well, Opanda seems to work wherever the other reader doesn't. Thanks for the link, Abel.

EDIT: Opanda works on my hard-disk pictures, too, which the other reader didn't. This is great!
