Underwater/Scuba showcase?

This is a discussion on Underwater/Scuba showcase? within the Site Info forums, part of the General Information category; I was wondering if it would be possible to add a new category to the "Showcase" sub-forums for underwater photography. ...

Underwater/Scuba showcase? - 12-27-2006, 11:43 AM

I was wondering if it would be possible to add a new category to the "Showcase" sub-forums for underwater photography. There seems to be quite a few scuba photographers here and I've noticed underwater photos tend to be scattered through the various showcase sub-forums because it's hard to define the right category.

I decided to make this request based on this thread.

I second!

Underwater photography definitely brings with it it's own challenges and equipment, and I think it's different enough to warrant it's own sub-category.

may do that... lemme think about it and maybe after the 2006 POY Contest we can do something. only thing is i dont see a whole lot of UW photography that would warrant its own section... maybe be we dont have one huh.. hehe.. who knows

only thing is underwater equipment talk will have to remain in the equip section.... since thats a catch all etc.

Couple of camera setups from trips I've been on -

We definitely need a forum to explain these!

Well, here's what little I know. Your d200 costs you about $1800. A strobe to support it underwater runs you about $900. (And you need 2 of them to do it right). See that little aluminum case in the bottom left hand corner that your DSLR hides in? Try $4500... U/W photography is one of those rare cases in which the housing is usually 2-3x what the equipment costs... OUCH!

And of course this is just STILL photography.. when you start shooting VIDEO on the other hand....

Not to mention the angst you may experience if the "O" ring fails and the housing floods...

This one is waaaay complicated. About 3 rigs with who knows how many spot and setup lights.. I call it "When Erector Sets Attack"

Like I say in my profile.. my two loves in life are scuba diving (technical) and photography... thank God I don't play golf or ski or have an interest in flying airplanes... those two are enough money sinkholes for me!

Thanks Abel. If we get a section, I'll get some folks I know to contribute. One of the top UW photography events in the world happens in Houston in May at the Sea Space event. There are some great sites dedicated to UW photography, but it would be nice to tie those guys into this forum as they are outstanding photographers. Imagine having all of the challenges of photography on land then throw in added equipment, low light, six degrees of freedom in movement, and fast moving targets.

Hmmm... Underwater is such a unique genre it seems like it should have it's own place. Techniques for the other types of photography don't necessarily work when the fluid medium that you are in is thicker than normal (air is a less dense fluid medium than water). I think if you build it they will come

It would be great to have an underwater section. We haven't posted many photos as most are underwater shots and didn't really know where to post. We are just starting to get into topside photography.

Here ya go...

Underwater Photography Section

There arent any posts in there right now but hopefully I can get some moved over later this week.

If you guys have some links to previous threads that showcased underwater photography, post them here in this thread and myself and the mods will make sure they get moved over. This would be a great help to us in making the section get off on the right foot! Its just tough for us to sift through and find them for ourselves.

Thanks guys...

I look forward to seeing more Underwater Photos... I came so close to geting my dive license back when i was a teenager... I was about 13 or 14 and only needed to complete my written test but the dive shop closed its doors unexpectidly and went bankrupt. all of that time spent in the pool and in classes and not to mention money spent on our open water test trip went to waste. never went back and took it somewhere else..

Does it count if I shot the picture from outside a fishtank?
