Should we keep the Critism Section? - 01-19-2005, 01:56 PM

Should we keep the Constructive Critism Corner section or should i just disperse those out amongst the rest of the sections..

my fear is that an average photog who wants to share his photo may get criticized a ton by a seasoned photog in turn, possibly scaring off a newbie photog.

what do u think.

maybe we can start to title our threads in a way that requests criticism.

for example:

CRITIQUE: Mecom Fountains in Hermann Park

and all other titles like:

Japanese Gardens in Hermann Park

will go as simple sharing thread not really an open invitation for critism etc...

I think we should have the Critique tag instead. That way the images would be in the proper categories for the subject matter and not all lumped into one sub-forum.

I think that if you post and image you basically open yourself up to critique whether you want it or not.

If anything I think the categories could be consolidated a little better. maybe drop the location forums and leave the rest as is, but let it be understood that if you post and image, you are opening yourself up for critique....(don't like the word criticism, just sounds bad)

The only thing I think needs to be made extremely clear by the admins and moderators is that "IT SUX" type post should not be allowed.

Now "IT SUX and this is why it sux" post should be welcome by all. Because unless others point our mistakes we never learn....or we learn who we should be taking advice from and who we shouldn't.

I didn't answer either one of the poll questions but I hope that you guys can understand my opinion.

Newbie Opinion - 01-19-2005, 04:34 PM

I just registered and I am sure that I am the newest member, LOL...but I agree with the above post, if you post you photo you are opening yourself up for a critique, why else do any of us post. I want to hear what people think, good, bad or indifferent that is how we learn...
But I would also say, keep the critique section, so if we are just looking for that we can just post our photo there and get straight thoughts and opinions.

Either way we all should understand that if we post we open ourselves up.

Andres

I agree with the above statements but would like add on a side note that if someone specifically asks for a critique in the subject line (with the tag as suggested) then sometimes people are more likely to respond to it with detailed tips/suggestions.

Someone might post a nice pic and everyone just looks at it and thinks 'oh what a nice pic' but no one really responds to the post.
But the posts that specifically ask for a critique in the subject line usually get more activity.

Just my .02

NO wait...how about a poll option that just makes abel keep coming up with other poll options for our entertainment.

See there are times when I am not shooting or editing and I am sitting in my office watching the stupid television show I edit just print to tape and need more entertainment.....

I agree with Clint in that all posts are subject to contructive criticism; therefore, a Critique section is somewhat redundant. What I don't agree with is getting rid of the city specific boards.

I guess if I were in a bigger city, I would like the city specifics better... they don't bother me....I really am starting to enjoy this place

I am for this option as stated above. I have seen many times on photography boards where a new member has posted a picture and the first response out of the gate is short and negative. It wasn't "It sucks", but the responses weren't very helpful and kind of rude. As someone who always errs on the side of newbies, I would prefer that people have a chance to feel comfortable sharing their work, before they start receiving heavy criticism.

Personally if I know that every picture I post is going to be torn apart then I won't post as much. I'm not ready for that. And when I feel I'm ready to get some serious critique on a picture, then I will post it with a Critique Tag.

I am definitely for a critique tag however, because I learn a lot from spending time in the critique sections of photo forums and I think that people who are ready for that level should have a way of identifying the photos up for critique.

Just my 2 cents.
