when you make a post (or New Reply, but not Quick Reply), go to Manage Attachments. At the bottom of the popup is some file size/dimensional guidelines.

The mechanics of posting images is not my question.

I had two images removed from a post by a moderator and I want to see exactly what TPF rules are for posting images.

The removed images were vintage hollywood portraits (20's-40's) that I found online and clearly indicated as such. They were provided solely for the purposes of lighting discussion - i.e. editorial context - and being over 50 years old probably fell into public domain anyway.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, just trying to get a VERY CLEAR understanding of what can be posted on the forum. Not linked to the forum, posted on the forum.

Thanks...

When you say "posted on" do you mean embedded with img tags, or actually uploaded as attachments? I would think you only want to do the latter with photos to which you are the copyright holder.

Embedding images using img tags that don't belong to you and are hosted somewhere else is IMHO probably not a bad idea even if it is somewhat of a gray area legally. Probably better to just hyperlink to them.

I uploaded attachments - no image tags, just photos found online as reference. From now on, I'll link to them...

Did you include a source of where they came from other than "online"? That may have been the problem, it's good to put sources with that sort of thing...

I'm confused.... isn't your avatar copywritten?
