Opteka anyone? - 04-07-2009, 07:24 AM

I've seen a lot of ads about a lens brand called Opteka. They have CRAZY cheap leanses! Anyone know anything about the quality?

I want to know from someone who owned/used one... not someone that thinks completely "you get what you pay for" because we have all spent money on a crapy lens b4.

They have a 500mm mirror lens (if I'm remembering it right) for $140ish. I know a lot of their lenses are crazy slow (f/6-8) at the largest, but if I can get a decent photo on sunny days, the slowness might be worth the $1,000's you save by staying away from the big names.

Well, I've never owned or used an Opteka mirror, but I've owned/used others. If you're looking for a 500mm mirror lens, there's no reason why you need to limit yourself to an Opteka, even if you don't have much money to spend. 500mm mirror lenses are pretty common on eBay, and some of the older ones can be had for quite a bit less than the price you mention. And just because they're old, doesn't mean they're not good optics. I owned a Sigma 600mm f/8 back in the 80s, and it was capable of rendering quite sharp images.

Best,

Michael

Mirror Lenses are fine if you like donut Bokeh.

As for Opteka not any happy users out there.

Save your money and buy quality glass.
