Moving to Another Country - 06-14-2009, 02:06 PM

I'm moving to the UK later this year, probably by Sept-Oct. time frame.

I don't sell my own photos but I've been asked several times to do some stuff for folks. I've been researching for the past 6 months and I think I'm ready to take the next steps.

Although I've debated how much I might actually sell (I have a full time job), I'm filing my taxes this year (I'm currently on an extension as I don't owe and was working out some details before I filed) as a business and I'm going to expense my equipment. I've talked to a CPA about this and I think I have this covered as I have to file both tax returns anyway.

My question is, I was going to join Smugmug to sell the photos with a Pro account. Is there any difference if I start and register now from the U.S. or would I be smart to wait and start Smugmug once I'm established in the UK? What I want to avoid is having to figure out conversions, etc. when I start selling here and then move and sell photos there. Potential concerns are just popping up in my head. I think Smugmug can handle everything I want and more and want to make sure I can do this no matter where I join from.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hey Mike,

I don't think it really matters whether you open up your SmugMug Pro account in the USA or the UK. No matter where you live, you will need to send us an updated w-9 form to where we should send your commissions checks.

It is very simple to fax in a new w-9 whenever you move. Here is a good page that shows instructions for both countries: http://www.smugmug.com/help/reporting

Look forward to working with you!

Markham
