Issue with iPhone users.. - 10-27-2011, 06:03 PM

Apparently they can still somehow get a copy of my images even if I have them right click protected. One of my clients uploaded a pic of themselves I took that was in my Smug Mug even after I checked the right click saving prevention tool. I'm assuming they take a pic of their current screen through their phone and well it gets saved somewhere in their phone. I'm not an iPhone user...obviously. I was wondering if there is a way to avoid this.

There is no way to avoid that.

They're doing a screen capture much like I have just done on my phone and posted here.

If your image is displayed online, then it can be taken regardless of right click disabling.

In fact they could do a screen capture on their computer and save your image that way as well.

The only true way of keeping your photos from being taken is to not put them online at all but what's the fun in that?

don't put your picture on smug mug

or put a big ugly watermark over it.

OR degrade the image to the point it looks pixilated before you upload it.

folks will pull up the web on their big screen and take pictures of your pictures with their camera phone and be perfectly happy with the results.

hmm, good to know, well I went ahead and downloaded the image she uploaded on FB to see the resolution of it. I wanted to know if she could make a reasonable 4x6 print from it. The resolution is 960x565 in 96 dpi and 24 bit depth, do you think that's good enough for a 4x6 print?..even if its not, i guess the screen capture from the actual monitor would be big enough? :/

the sad truth is, anything good enough online to reflect the quality of your image is going to be printable, probably up to 5x7 without it looking just bad...

I wonder if its worth the effort to come up with something that runs lines through a selected background color, and 'ruins' the picture without breaking the quality...

Watermarks are your best bet in this situation. There's no sure fire way to stop the behavior you describe, so you have to make the photo itself undesirable to curb the behavior.

one thing you could do... is maybe give them a small lores copy for facebook... something like 600x400 72dpi with your watermark on it.

that way it helps get your name out there and you can somewhat control the quality of what OTHER potential clients see of your work...

just an idea.

Sad but true. Any photos online can be taken even with right-click protection enabled. Right click protection really only prevents the less savvy interent users from stealing your work. Watermarks are the answer.

I hate putting a watermark right thru the middle of proofs that I have posted for a client to view, but because of a select few, it seems to be the only way to keep people from taking pix of their computer monitor with the iphone.
