As a very unhappy Phanfare user, I am considering SmugMug again. But......
I have a Canon 1D MkIII, and my jpg files can sometimes jump up as high as 16+MB's. or be as low as 4MB's, depending on the image detail. This would mean I would have to buy an unneeded "pro" account just to be able to upload all of my images.
I really don't need a Pro account!
Any plans to increase the 12MB max upload allowable in the Power Acct. to accommodate us non-pro hobbyists who have the new higher megapixil cameras? (Phanfares current limit is 20MB as I recall) | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

I have used smugmug for a year now. I am an amatuer photog but opted for the pro account. I believe it is like 150.00 a year which in my mind I find very reasonable for several reasons.
1. Unlimited space - I have well over a gig in photos.
2. Disaster recovery - if my machine crashes I still have "what I believe" is my best photos on my site. (You can order all your prints on DVD at any time)
3. I can set my own prices -not that I sell many photo's but who knows in the future I can expand very easily.
4. Excellent front end.
5. Excellent printing at a really good price.
6. Excellent service and support. (I can't say enough about this).
7. Totally customizable interface.
I believe if smugmug wanted they could charge twice this and still be worth every penny and heck I'm not even making money off this.
And the main reason - Smugmug is offering a discount for all members of this forum!!
All I can say is Smugmug is by far the best digital hosting site on the net. Well that's my feelings and I'm sticking with it.

Wow, John that is a glowing email. Thank you so much, we should look at hiring you :)
Yes, I understand the concern for Hogleg, but currently we don't have plans to raise the limits.
There is a good page on resolution we have written that is very informative talking about the quality of prints to resolution. Check it here: http://www.smugmug.com/help/print-quality
Also, really GREAT news!! We have a 50% off Coupon for all Phanfare refugees. When signing up for the SmugMug service, just enter: phanfare in the coupon field for 50% off the first year!!
ALSO, we have a tool to "slurpe" all your images from Phanfare directly into your SmugMug account. We are still testing it but it is pretty slick!
Here is how:
- Install SmuggLr into Firefox ( http://www.smugglr.net/test)
- Restart Firefox
- Start SmuggLr (Tools->SmuggLr from within Firefox)

I have Safari, Not Firefox...I'm on a Mac. Does it work with Safari?
And. I possibly have 15,000 full size iD MkII and Mk III images in Phanfare, maybe more!!!
Whew!!! That would be a REAL TEST of that beta tool!!!!
Some of those images I have in Phanfare exceed the 12MB limit. I just don't need the selling features of a $150 Pro account, ( second year and after of course ) but I occasionally need more than the 12 MB file limit>
I really don't want to have to go to the trouble of searching out any of the very few really big files that pop up occasionally and downsize them before uploading. That would be a real drag...if you know what I mean.

1) Download FireFox. Safari doesn't support extensions. I am a Mac Safari/Firefox guy myself.
2) Sign up for SmugMug free 14-day trial on our Pro Account. www.smugmug.com/pro
3) Use the Smugglr to import all your photos from Phanfare up to 24MB.
4) When they are all inside SmugMug, change your subscription level down to Power.
5) Convert your account to become our most loyal beloved customers!
When you downgrade your account, we allow your files 12MB and higher to stay, but you won't be able to upload more without converting to a Pro account.
Thanks!

I like the idea of your slurpe thing. Pretty Cool!!!
The main reason I am disgruntled with phanfare is because it seems they are going to start requiring that any one viewing my pics there have some type of phanfare 'account'. A friend wishing to see my images will HAVE to through some type of portal page, join the community, before going to my albums. If they get an email invite, the community account is created automatically, and they go straight to the pics. If I invite them verbally or giving them my phanfare address they will have to join the community. I think this is awful!!! No Public Albums.
To my knowledge, SmugMug does not do this, do you? You do still have Public Albums, where I can invite an acquaintance, like maybe someone I talk to at a car show, or post a link on a website, and they can go directly to my open albums??? (albums not private or passworded of course) And hopefully you have no plans to implement something like this.
......
Well. I'll consider this.....
Maybe, If I decide to go SmugMug, Ill sign up for the pro account for a year at the current unhappy Phanfare 50% promo offer. I don't mind $75. Then at the end of that year downgrade. Maybe by then you will have found it necessary to up the 12MB Power limit.
How long will the phanfare promo run? I really don't think the s__t has 'hit the fan' there yet, because the actual changeover is still days away, and I suspect a lot of the current users aren't really aware of about what is to happen if they "Upgrade" immediately when it comes. Some will be happy with it, but others like myself will be looking for another place.

We will never ever require a visitor to register and don't agree with that business model. Seems they have landed some funding from VC's and that is the way they have pushed them to go.
Their CEO has been very kind and said nice things about SmugMug and we'll happily help their "Pro" users transfer over.
SmugMug is a profitable, debt free, family owned business that never accepted VC money. That is the way we like it and plan to stay
Keep me posted on your experience. We will definitely refund your money for the last year of your service if you think we suck and have not treated you well. We also offer a 100% guarantee on all your and your visitors prints! http://www.smugmug.com/prints/our-guarantee.mg
Thanks,

Markham | Markham,
Hey not problem you guys are doing a great job. What I say about Smugmug has been earned. Everywhere I see Smugmug I see support. I mean when we have problems as paying users you guys are right there to make it right. Smugmugs services are by far superior. You listen to your pro-members and make changes upon there suggestions and ideas - you guys listen and that is by far more then I can say about any other services I have ever encountered. And you can't put a price on the great job Smugmug has done.
I think you would agree that once a smuggie you make everyone feel like they are a part of the bigger picture and that is what will have Smugmug with a warehouse full of servers and will easily catapolt to the #1 hosting site in the world.
Don't change your formula because in my eyes you have the winning recipe!
Let me know when your ready to build that server warehouse I may take ya up on that job!
Merry Christmas...
John....

Hogleg,
Don't know your image hosting needs, but consider flickr.com. Their pro account is just $25 per year! The monthly upload bandwidth is 2GB, but the storage space is unlimited. I've been using them for about 1.5 years now with zero problems. Don't know what phanfare or smugmug offers, but if your intent is just to host and share your photos, flickr.com is great for that.
Edited

Just realized this thread's forum. No intent at all to offend or undermind smugmug.

Well...Guess I'm going to go SmugMug when my trial nears the end. I was also thinking Zen but my Daughter (40 something) was comparing my trial of both sites and found a definite + on SmugMugs behalf. On SM's site she noticed the rule, "No Nudity", so she went to Zen and typed 'Nudity' into a search box...and got some! (Artistic, not the other kind)
Not Cool, since I have a 9 year old Granddaughter who is more Web Savvy than a 9 year old ought to be. And, she has 3 little brothers.
My Daughter went back to SmugMug and did a search for 'Nudity'....somehow some "Red Hat Ladies" turned up!!!! Not Nude.... Thank Gosh!!!!
So unless Andrew at PP decides to let us 'lifetimers' continue on indefinitely with the old version...which ain't goona happen IMHO, SM, I'm coming aboard!
My only other SM concern is that I have seen references in the past that SM members have not been able to access their sites. Servers overloaded or SM site down??? But I'm trusting that those issues are non issues.

Hey Markham (Biz Guy! )
As I said in my previous post,(in case you hadn't noticed it during the Holidays) I plan to Go for Pro when my trail nears it's end.
I'm just curious about something.
When I create a Gallery, and add Key Words during the creation, are those words the only words used by SM for searching, even though I may have the same Key Words imbedded in the IPTC data in the image?
I guess what I am trying to ask is, does SM pick up those words automatically from the image data? Am I duplicating what is already there when I add words at the Gallery creation?
ps. It's nice that you seem to allow unlimited uploading during the trial period. I have put more than just a few gigs in my site already!

We might have nudity but if we do it is typically under a password protected gallery AND it is "supposed" to be the artistic kind. Quite frankly because of our Popular page, our customers are our best screeners and monitors because it usually pops up there so fast. They usually tell us within an hour of something unappropriate for children.
Please come aboard and if you find ever find unappropriate nudity you can report it to me and we'll notify the customer.

We do allow you to put keywords for the gallery and for the photo for additional searching and classification ability.
Here is an interesting writeup about IPTC and SM. http://smugmug.jot.com/WikiHome/Pros...ordsToMetadata
NOTE:Only the first 15 keywords you enter for a photo will be indexed by SmugMug's search.
