Use your own domain name on your SmugMug account - 03-19-2008, 07:18 PM

For those of you that are getting a little bit more serious with SmugMug and want to start selling your photos to customers, I recommend looking at our Pro account. www.smugmug.com/pro

We have all the tools to allow you to run your business without all the headache of fulfillment etc. Our guarantee is so nice: http://www.smugmug.com/prints/our-guarantee.mg

We also have the ability for you to buy your own domain name for very cheap through GoDaddy and use it instead of your "www.nickname.smugmug.com" Go here for details: www.smugmugdomains.com We set up the DNS settings for you.

Here is a good page that explains: http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts

Man, I wish i would have known I could buy from GoDaddy through SmugMug...I would have done that...but alas! I've already purchased directly from GoDaddy...Oh well, the instructions seem easy enough. I'll get the hang of this yet!
With customer service like this, who would complain?

Yahoo? I am sorry :( Just kidding, I am sure they are fine.

Although, did you know that this page: www.smugmugdomains.com works for transfers as well?

Question Never mind. - 03-23-2008, 06:33 PM

Seems my domain name registrar may have reset my CNAME to a blank field. I'll wait until I know it's working before I ask for help.

Hi Kenney, it seems to be working now. By the way, did you use www.smugmugdomains.com site?

Yup!!! Me 2!
Right after I bought my SM/P service. I've got it redirected now, but need to set it up as a Cname! I came across the 'SM using GoDaddy' instructions once, but had other custom SM stuff going on at that time. I need to find that again and do it.

But I had a question before trying to set it up. Both addresses, (nickname and CName) will still work when you set up a cname won't they Markham?

Yep, both nickname and cname will still work for anyone that you may have your nickname.

Use these instructions for setting up the CNAME with GoDaddy: http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/Smug...dy+CNAME+Setup

Thanks,
Markham

It is already working, nice job!

Usually GoDaddy is pretty fast. Our www.smugmugdomains.com site it takes 1-2 minutes!

No. I jumped on a domain name before you posted that info. I did manage to figure out that my domain name registrar had somehow deleted my CNAME info. It updated about 20 minutes after I put it back in.

I've capture a screen shot of the config page to make it easier to check in the future.

Thanks!

FYI--we essentially make nothing for selling GoDaddy domains. We negotiated with the to give all our users AND TRANSFERS the very lowest price possible.

If you want to transfer your domain name it is very slick and easy as well. www.smugmugdomains.com

Markham, I already have a domain name registered with godaddy. I tried to set it up following your instructions above, but got the following error. Help!
ERROR - A CNAME record for the alias www already exists. Choose a unique alias name.

FWIW Bill, in case Markham doesn't see this right away...I seem to recall running into that same thing when I was setting my Cname up by those instructions. Try it again, and read everything on the GoDaddy pages very carefully. I seem to recall that my problem was, that I was missing some detail in a selection that I had to make during the process. I had not highlighted something correctly....I think!!!
