Question on nudity - 05-30-2008, 08:47 AM

hi Markham,

I have a question. I read your policy on nudity and it says none allowed, but I was wondering what if it's a private/passworded gallery? What if I were to have a photoshoot with a model, and wanted to post the photos for her to look over, would that still be inappropriate? It's not like minors could just stroll up in there and take a peek, right?

I'm not talking porn or anything. Tasteful nudes/semi-nudes.

My 'edit photos' says no; but because there is no "sometimes" option.

We're pretty set on our no nudity policy but we have been a little lenient with a photographer that has a gallery or two of shots that you are talking about. But, if nudity is a big part of your business, it doesn't sound like we're a good fit for you.

Thanks.

So is that a "no, its not ok, even if the gallery is hidden" answer?

Good question, if you have a pro account and have private gallery. I don 't shoot any either but I am curious.

It's a family business and they have a right to say absolutely "no," so I can respect that.

My photos are anything but racy, but I don't want to step over the line if, say, a bride wants some sexy shots (which would be password-protected, if that helps). Not a big part of my business, either.

1st lets not argue about the policy everyone here is in agreement. The question is “If you have a pro account, and password protected, content protected area is there any issues with that?” Cause to be honest with you, if I am spending 150.00 a year on my web space and ended up shooting some nudes or implied nudes and wanted to have them printed or give the option to the person shot to print them via my SmugMug account is that ok as long as its password protected? As Marc said is this your main focus or not if so than SmugMug is not a good fit for you? The whole thing is a bit vague now based on some of the answers provided by SmugMug. Can we get more detail clarification as in any business you do not want to be limited in what you can or cannot do to grow your business no matter what it is?

It sounds like one of those things...they aren't real excited about it, but if people will be responsible (make them password protected, don't make their website about nudity, etc) then they will allow it. The problem as we all know...is, some ding bat will come and push the envelope and make it so no one can do anything remotely nude.

Remember you don't need a Pro account to password protect and make your gallery "unlisted".

We know there is a lot of gray area and it is a very tricky subject. For the most part photographers that specialize in nudity don't fit in well with SmugMug because inevitably there are complaints. We just don't want anyone searching on SmugMug to be able to find it openly.

IF the photographer has a business outside of nudity but has a few nude galleries that are password protected, we are ok with that. Nobody will ever find them through a search.

Good deal, this is what I was looking for as I am sure others as well.

Further more, I personally do not want SmugMug flooded with this type of stuff, my kids, wife, wifes parents, etc. Print family stuff from my SmugMug account and I do not want them seeing this sorta stuff openly on any site let alone SmugMug!

Thanks Mark for clearing this up.

Ok, that's what I thought the policy was... all of my nudes are hidden in non-searchable galleries.
