Arrow Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 SSM G SAL-70400G - 11-30-2009, 10:47 AM

Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 SSM G

Description:

The Sony SAL-70400G 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM Lens is a 5.7x super telephoto lens, specifically designed for the Sony Alpha SLR series. When mounted to Sony APS-C format Alpha DSLRs, this zoom lens achieves a phenomenal 105-600mm focal length (35mm equivalent). As part of the G series of high quality lenses, the SAL-70400G is designed to deliver extremely sharp performance across its wide focal length range, and it is well suited for sports, action, or wildlife photography.

This lens features high-speed SSM (SuperSonic-Wave Motor) for autofocus speed and precision, and the focus-mode/range switch and three focus-hold buttons provide enhanced operability. And when used with the Alpha 900 SLR camera, the AF hold buttons can be customized to activate the intelligent preview function.

SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) A built-in lens motor for faster automatic focusing with high torque at low speed, quick start/stop response, and quiet, smooth operation.

ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass Two precision ED Glass lenses correct chromatic aberrations and deliver visually accurate results even at full telephoto zoom extension.

Focus Hold Three Focus Hold buttons are provided, which lock the focus at the press of a button.

Focus-Range Limit Two focus-range limit settings reduce auto-focusing time.

Circular Aperture Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.

Tripod Collar The removable tripod collar rotates 360° so that the camera and lens can be orientated in any position when mounted from above or below.

Performance:
  • Focal Length 70 - 400 mm
  • Comparable APS-C Focal Length: 105 - 600 mm
  • Aperture Maximum: f/4 - 5.6, Minimum: f/22 - 32

Just got it - 01-26-2010, 09:03 PM

Kenneth,

Thanks for the post. I've had the lens for less than a week and have not really had a chance to get a bunch of shots with it. I got in on the eagle action in Baytown on Sunday, but didn't really distinguish myself. I am using an a700 with the lens, so it remains to be seen how well it does. The shots you posted of the ducks ( I don't know my birds) is really sharp and clear. I am hoping to get it out on Armand Bayou soon and see how it compares to my old lenses. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.

Slow as in aperature or AF speed?

I had no problems with the AF speed I could see where the aperature could be a problem at night games.

Thanks for the post! I too recently picked up this lens, but haven't had much opportunity to use it. It is seriously stretching the zoom lens compartment of my bag though.
