Sony 50mm f/1.4 SAL-50F14 - 07-22-2008, 11:33 AM

Sony 50mm f/1.4

Description:

The Sony SAL-50F14 50mm f/1.4 Lens is an ultra-bright standard lens for fast, accurate shooting with available light. This lens provides superb clarity and visual accuracy even with fully open aperture when working indoors or in low-light and twilight conditions.

Mounted on the Sony α (alpha) DSLR-A100 camera, this lens provides a midrange telephoto 75mm focal length (35mm equivalent), and takes advantage of the in-camera Super SteadyShot image stabilization system to minimize blur from shaky hands.

Also compatible with all Minolta 35mm and digital AF cameras.

The bright f/1.4 aperture provides the ability to capture more light in dark environments, ideal for hand-held shooting without flash, to preserve the mood or in locations where flash is not permitted.

  • Focal Length 50 mm
  • Comparable APS-C Focal Length: 75 mm
  • Aperture Maximum: f/1.4, Minimum: f/22

I think it will be a great start for you. My primary portrait lens now is my 135 Zeiss, but it is on an A900 and would be crazy long on your A350. Start with the 50mm f/1.4 and if you love it and use it a lot, consider the 85 f/1.4 Zeiss, or even a used Minolta 85 f/1.4.

There are some good deals going on the A700. You may want to check that out. Adorama had the A700K for $899.

Switching mounts can be expensive in both money and time but I won't tell you not to make a jump. I will tell you that buying a different brand at the same level camera typically will not improve the images you are getting. They are all tools and are only as good a tool as the person using them. If you want some help getting to know your camera better let some of the Alpha shooters on the board know. All the ones I know will be more than happy to help you out. I have been shooting A mount since it was all manual Minolta gear and have never had a reason to switch to another brand. Most of the times the gear I have performs better than my abilities to use it. Is there some specific issue you are having that we can help you out with?

Thanks guys! I'm pretty new at this, and although I've had the camera for a few years, just now putting it to professional use. I guess my biggest deal with it is I just feel the Canons adjusments button when shooting in manual are just more user friendly. Don't get me wrong, I love the camera...but just from what I've seen when playing around with them, their images just seem to come out a lot sharper sooc. I'm sure that a lot has to do with my knowledge of it too, although I know enough to get me around, I also know there is still PLENTY to learn about it.

I'm also really wanting a couple of new lenses for one, one being a 50m...all I have know is the big 75-300 which is for some of the outdoor stuff that I was shooting when I first got the camera.
