Rockwall Heath at Sherman - 09-05-2009, 01:07 AM

I'm posting this one photo not because it's worthy of inclusion on this forum, but because I'm at my wit's end as to how to improve my sports photography.
Here's the particulars, first of all, on the photo that I've posted:
Camera - Canon D30 (I know it's an old camera)
Lens - Sigma 70-200 2.8
No flash
Settings: ISO 1600 and as I recall I shot predominantly in AV mode which fluctuated the speed from 250 to 500.
Finally, any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance

Hi Jeff, AV mode is not good for night sports photography, go to manual. Use a flash if you have it..

[FONT="Comic Sans MS"][SIZE="2"][COLOR="Red"]A couple of things I use when a flash is not permitted.

1. TV mode with a setting any where from 90 to 250. 250 is the max for me and I'm shooting race cars.

2. 2.8 lenses or faster.

3. ASA is anywhere from 1000 to 3200. Does your Canon 30 have a "H" setting at the ASA? If so, that maybe your 3200. Check your book.

4. I shot in RAW - I do use noise reduction in the camera and sometimes in the conversion stage.

Tv mode is not the best choice either.

Even though the light at HS football typically sucks... it is at least consistent for the most part so a great place to learn to use M. If you are at a loss on what setting to use then take a few in Av to get an idea on a shutter range.

ISO 1600 on most fields will result in shutters around 1/250 to 1/400 from my experience and that is really going to make it difficult to stop the action. I prefer 1/640 or higher

Without a flash, you need to set it to at least 1/500th f/2.8 at the highest ISO you can get away with. If that's not enough, you'll have to go with a flash solution and follow the action from the sidelines (as opposed to the endzone).

Shoot RAW!! You can bring out more detail using RAW files if they are dark like the one posted.

Good luck! - looking forward to your next post and don't worry, we've all been there!

Joe
