Rodeo work from this summer - 10-13-2009, 09:59 PM

Attended the Association of Texas Photography Instructors Workshop this past summer. Group of us went to Cooper to shoot the rodeo the last night of the workshop. These are some of my favs. The light sucked in the arena, and they didnt like me using strobes too much so some are not my normal stop action photography.

Nice work! I've been looking for an outdoor rodeo to do some shooting at, but have been coming up empty.

From what I understand, this one always takes place around the middle of July.

I've done some of that but I didn't know you did Clint. The one memory that stayed with me is that I have no business being in the ring when they release those bulls. I'm not fast enough and they are big a powerful and can put a hurt on you! I don't remember the number of cowboys that limped out after one ride. Looks like they let you get by with flash on the bulls.

Wes. you need to find someone that does this on a regular basis. The one I did was in Cleburne and I was helping someone but to get in the ring I had to have a hat and boots. I went ahead and put on jeans and a shirt and like Clint said, it was hot and in July.

Hope you had a good time Clint and that either the bulls were slow or you were fast!

I shot Rodeo a few times...it's MUCH easier to shoot a daytime rodeo. And speaking of being in the ring...yeah, I shot in the ring ONCE, and yeah, I was too old, too fat and a city slicker who had never really seen a rodeo before. I captured THIS sequence and that was the last time I was in the ring:

you can go to cowboy sports news on the web to find rodeo's to shoot. you can even go to Ft. Worth and shoot at the stock yards. i do a lot of rodeo shooting, i decided after rideing bulls for 25yrs i could do a little shooting of the riders.

jleyendecker added 3 Minutes and 41 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

the only time i didnt use a flash of any kind was during the barrel racing. when i was a kid at the AJRA finals i seen a photographer use a flash and it spooked the horse, she didnt get hurt but it put her way down in the standings and the dad well lets just say the photographer didnt use the flash anymore!
i never had anyone get upset with the flash, but i try not to use it simply because it will distract the animal!

Hey, those look pretty good. I shot some at Banderas Days over Labor Day weekend.

Had a bunch of fun watching as well. Admittedly, those guys have bigger ba**s than I do.......
