7D settings - 11-13-2009, 10:00 AM

Has anyone figured out good settings for the 7D for football? Especially in the autofocus area configuration? Zone AF, Single point w/AF expansion?

I had fewer keepers using the sensitivity setting in the middle and center point focus than I hoped. I was going to move sensitivity to the left and try the expansion mode, but our last game was canceled after the shootings on Ft Hood.

Andrew discusses it some in this thread, I believe. http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...d.php?t=111174

I used it tonight at a playoff game and was really disappointed in the focusing. Tried center point only then switched to Center with AF Expansion. With each the focus jumped all over the place for no reason. But the color and improved noise levels were great. Anybody have some settings that work and are getting in-focus, sharp action photos? I called Canon this morning to ask their experts and I kid you not, this was their reply "So what makes you think that we know?" Uh...hello?

Have you seen the B&H videos mentioned in this thread? http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...d.php?t=111926 (They are about the 7D, not this question in particular.)

I wonder if you'd have had different results trying the AF sensitivity on tracking your subject? C Fn III - 1

My buddy in Ohio got one for sports to try out...focus was EVERYWHERE!

Hes had the MarkI through the MarkIII and tried everything but shots where as bad if not worse than the MKIII when it first came out.

Im kind of glad I didnt get one.

I found a blog where the guy listed all of his settings and used them last night. Boy, did they work. I maybe got 5-6 OOF all night. The camera is awesome now. Here are a few from last night. There is no noise reduction done in camera or in post. ISO 3200 1/500th sec (approx.). This is straight out of the camera. It's all about the settings...

I am going to use it at the Aeros hockey game this afternoon.

Oh, Diana, I found a blog that gives me the winning lotto numbers a week ahead of time.

Oh, maybe I should share? :)

Ca'mon, what were the magic settings?

And I am glad to hear there was success.

OK - Here they are:

Picture Style - Standard (but sharpness upped to 4)

C.Fn III: Autofocus Drive
1 - AI Servo tracking Sensitivity: Set to -1
2 - AI Servo 1st/2nd img priority - Set to 0 - AF priority/Tracking Priority
3 - AI Servo Tracking Method - Set to 0 - Main Focus point priority (that way the camera focuses on what you want, not what it wants)
4 - Lens Drive when AF impossible - Set to 0
5 - AF Microadjustment - Set to 0 (Most people have said this is ineffective. Even the manual says it needs to be done on location where you are shooting to do any good.)
6 - AF area select mode - I have single point w/expansion selected and single point. Been shooting mostly on single point w/expansion for sports.
7 - AF Manual pt. selection pattern - Set to 1 (Continuous)
8 - VF display illumination - set to 1 (Enable)
9 - Display all AF points - Set to 0
10 - Focus Display in AI Servo/MF - Set to 0
11 - AF-assist beam firing - set to 2 (Enable to external flash only)
12 - Orientation linked AF point - Set to 0
13 - Mirror lockup - Set to 0 (Disable)

C.FN IV: Operations/Others

Shutter button is set to Meter only
AF-ON button is turned OFF (too easy to hit accidentally)
AE lock button (*) is set for metering and AF Start

That is how mine is set up up right now and seems to work great. If any of you find a setting on anything that works better, let us all know!

So now that you have it dialed in, how does it compare to the ID Mark IIn?

It's different, the feel, weight, etc. It is lighter and the grip is a little more squared off. But all in all I would have to say better.

From someone with your demonstrated ability, this is probably the best endorsement I've read of the 7D for sports.

Just curious, Diana - will you shoot two 7D bodies now or shoot a 1D Mk IIn with one lens and a 7D with the other? I see you used your 400 f2.8 on the Mk IIn and your 70-200 f2.8 on the 7D. Any reason for using those lenses on those bodies? Do you find it confusing going from one set of controls to another quickly while on the field?

Just so those who are curious can debate... here is a recent 3200 ISO with the Mark III. Im not gonna argue which is better but hopefully smeone deciding will want to see. My main concern would be low light focus ability of the 7D. Plan to rent one for my next performance to see the comparison.
