To trigger the Alien Bees, I use the Universal Elinchrom Skyports (two transmitters and two receivers). I have a transmitter on each body. got 'em from B&H Photo.

To trigger the camera remotely, I have a wireless transmitter and receiver made by Phottix. I don't really know the maximum working distance but the transmitter triggered the camera from the far end of the court. When the camera fired, the Skyport transmitter mounted in the hot shoe fired the strobes.

I thought you might recognize that gym, Robert.

Mike fantastic job as always. You are a regular pro with the lights no days! I did not break mine out for the two tournaments this past week for a number of reasons, and when I look at these I keep saying to myself you should have taken them :-).

Just not the same as shooting with lights that is for sure!!!

I would love to see how they setup/work as well

Is it possible to do this with 2 580's? I have all the stuff except brackets or are they just not enough light?

edit: just a note I am shooting in a much smaller middle school gym

I have seen someone strobe a gym with two camera flashes. I personally do not think they push out enough light as you still have to use fairly high ISOs, but it's certainly doable, especially if that is the equipment you have to work with and don't want to be out a lot of money.

Anyone wanting to see strobes in use are more than welcome to come out and shoot with me anytime they want. I know that's a pretty long haul from Lewisville and Tyler :-). We'll actually be up in the DFW area strobing three different gyms near the end of Feb.

Jason,

What setup do you use? I'm thinking about purchasing a few Alien Bees to strobe a gym, and I'd be interested to see how you set things up.

I use 2 AB1600s. Sometimes I use a third light at half court. I'll probably use 2 1600s and my 2 400s in DFW at the end of Feb.

Patrick sounds good.

Jason, Hi this is KO in the DFW area. Have you encountered any issues with the Refs preventing you from shooting with strobes? I was stopped tonight at SMU... I was scheduled to shoot 2 playoff games for MP and they quoted rules from the NFHS rulebook. This was the third time this has happened to me this season. BTW where are you shooting here in the DFW area?

Have you seen the rules in question and or what do they specifically address.

From my understanding if the players or coaches do not object then the referee's are not to keep you from using flash. Below is a copy of an old letter from TASO that has addressed the issue. Of course things might have changed since.

September 18, 2006

To: TASO Officials

From: Steven Ellinger

Re: Flash Photography

Flash photography is permitted during regular season and playoff games unless a request is made to a game official from one of the coaches or players for a photographer to cease using flash equipment because the flash equipment poses a safety issue, the flash equipment interferes with play, or the flash equipment is a distraction to the players.

Flash photography is not permitted at the volleyball and basketball state tournaments because the flash equipment interferes with the equipment of the official UIL state tournament photographer.

Game officials are advised not to take any action on their own during games with respect to flash photographers unless a request described above has been made by one of the coaches or players.
