Hey Jeff I shot the Miners last year and they are a high flying bunch, especially #3 Cullpepper. I got some great flying action of him.

-Personally I think you have a good start for a second timer. The last one is my fav because even though it's a fraction of a second after the peak action you still have the ball exiting the net. Great face and expression but I would crop out some of the negative space around him, mainly on top and behind. What are you using for WB? It seems a little off to me.

-On the 1st shot you have a little motion blur and maybe I would crop a little tighter. Don't know if you can up the shutter speed in there? Check WB also.

-In the second one, although you captured a great block there are no faces. I have so many that would be awesome if that one hand, or one arm wasn't blocking the face. However that's fast action sports for you. Also take a little off the top.

Great start. Keep shooting as much as you can and just work on capturing that peak action. These are just my personal opinions so I hope I helped. Thanx for sharing and good luck!

Thanks for the specific feedback- that's exactly what I need.

WB- I shot a gray card at the beginning of the game then got distracted and didn't notice until the end of the night that I failed to switch the camera from "auto" to "custom"- rookie mistake.
Motion blur- tried to use a little lower iso for noise reduction- didn't work so I upped it back to 1600. Again, rookie mistake.

This is the shot of the ball going in the net, but the guy's arms are so big every time he picks them up he obscures his face. What do you think of this one?

The same guy had a nice tip in. What do you think of this one?

1. On this one kinda the same as far as motion blur, WB, and the arm blocking his face. I do like the crop though on this one.

Crops kinda depend on who the images are going to. Some wire agencies like a little room for their clients to play with but not too loose. Others want images that are ready to use so they need to be cropped tighter.

2. Nice crop and action and the fact that you don't have all the face is alright on this one. He's still recognizable, especially if he were a big name player. Seems like they may be over pp'd since you have some jagged edges throughout the images like on the rim and on the letters on the uniforms.

Some of these NCAA arenas may be a bit dim so ISO's of 3200, 4000 and up isn't unheard of. I met the Miners team photog and he told me that he usually shoots at ISO 5000 in their arena. Hope this helps, good luck to ya!

Hey Jeff no prob just have fun with it. If you can also shoot HS games that will also give you good practice. Face, Action, Ball, if you can get all 3 of them in a shot then awesome but don't forget the sportraits as well. A big player in deep thought or showing emotion is awesome.

There's a lot of emotion on the bench too and coaches are pretty animated at times. Fans are awesome and crazy at times so don't forget them as well. Work on your exposures, I like to start at 1/500 for bball and go from there. I don't know Canons so I'm not sure what kind of ISOs you can get out of your camera but it looks like you may have to kick it up some.

Enjoy shooting and go Miners........unless they play SMU.

Thanks. My 1d2n produces _a lot_ of noise in the higher iso range but I'll just have to deal with it with Neat Image. I'll put your suggestions next time.

BTW... played SMU a couple weeks ago... and won. :)
