Job Hazard - 02-01-2010, 06:15 PM

I was taking individual trophy pics of my son's baseball team on Sunday, and they took advantage of my inability to move. Sorry for the size, but it was a FB pic from a team mom.

So many teams are already playing! Too cold for me, I think there ought to be a 50 degree rule, as in- call the game if it drops below 50! Do you take any safeguards against condensation on your gear when shooting in cold weather around here?

If I recall correctly...you only have condensation issues when going from cold -> warm temps. It's alot worse when it's warm and humid. (Anyone who's taken a camera from cold AC to hot, humid gulf coast temps know what I mean.) When taking a cold camera into warm conditions, you can always put it in a zip lock bag until the whole camera warms up to the ambient temp and you'll be fine.

We have another tournament this weekend, and it's supposed to be in the upper 30's to low 40's! I shake enough due to massive caffeine intake; I don't need the cold weather making it worse. At least it will be close to the house.

I haven't been bagging my camera when exiting my car, but I won't turn it on for a few minutes so that it gets closer in temp to the colder air.

My son started the whole thing, and I haven't raised his allowance in years. It would be a shame if they broke the body. I would have no other option but to go buy a 7D. hmmm....

...warm camera taken into cold air - no condensation.
...cold camera taken into warm/humid air - condensation.

So if you take your camera from your warm house into the cold outside air, you shouldn't have a problem. But once your camera gets 'cold', it's best to bag it before you take it into the warmth. That's when condensation happens. (Kinda like how you get condensation on a cold mug of beer in a warm bar. But your warm cup of coffee in the cold air doesn't have any condensation.)

David - This is off topic, but I went to your website and was curious about the flash system you're using. Nice pics, btw.

Thanks...As far as flash system...most of the off camera flash stuff was done with Radio Poppers on a 580 II or the older 550 Canon flash. The newborns were done with using a 45" or 60" shoot thru umbrella. The wedding stuff was done either just holding the camera in 1 hand and hold the flash away from my body with the other hand....or 1 or 2 flashes up on stands for reception shots. Radio Poppers rule...at least in my book.

...and actually I need to update that site. I pretty much thru that together and need to put better images on it.
