Snowshoe Softball: Chilkoot Charlie's vs. Darwin's Theory - 03-07-2010, 09:15 PM

I'd love to be able to say these guys saw my ad on Craig's List and flew me up to Anchorage to take pictures, but such was not the case. A couple of the flight attendants I worked with on this trip knew that two of the local bars were having their annual "snowshoe softball" game today, so I took the camera and went to shoot some softball. In this game, the loser goes to the winner's bar and buys the first round (Darwin's--green shirts--lost). Beer rules were the order of the day, in which the batter gets a beer at first base and has to finish it before reaching home plate. It was a fun game and something different to shoot.

Man that would rank right up there with backyard football in the pouring rain! That looks like a blast. Not sure about the snow shoes, but I guess if the snow was too deep they would be a must have.

My favorite is the batter face down in the snow.

These guys did have a blast. In places the snow was about mid-calf on me (I didn't have snowshoes), so snowshoes were an essential piece of equipment. Besides, it makes for a more challenging game (as if running the bases for the fourth or fifth time under "beer rules" wasn't challenging enough as it is!)
