With a prime lens you give up the opportunity to shot some images. That is a given. However by doing that you gain so much more in the images you do capture. Aslo it forces you to think about shots, and allows for much more dynamic images with close up shots.

When the play gets close..I just get great close up images. And to be honest, I prefer these kind (as do parents it seems from sales. They like their babies eyes and face!)

Hey Gary- Here's a link to an old thread I posted where Thomas Campbell gives some good instruction on shooting sports with a prime. It's informative and helpful, even if you don't pick up a prime this go-round.

Way to spend Gary's $ for him Lonnie. A 300/2.8? No problem!

Since I can't buy any new toys I have to spend other photogs money! It is much more satisfying than window shopping.

I just shot the MkIV with a 300 this weekend at the Texas State High School Hockey finals...in a word. BLISS!
As far as settings, I have not read the manual yet either but I set them the same way I set my mkIII for the most part and I change many of them. There are some new things that I have to read about still and will get to that in the next couple of weeks. I can certainly answer questions for you on a specific setting if you want to PM me but most are just playing with them to figure out what you like and it would take me an hour to go through each one and I am no where near done yet!
I first recommend you rear focus if you don't already, get your ISO on button you can get to without looking, set your shutter and aperture to buttons that are natural to you including the direction you feel is up or down...they are all customizable so might as well just figure out what each setting does and then do what feels right. No need to learn this camera when you can make it work for you exactly the way you want.

I have to be able to change everything without taking my eye off the action or I will get hit in the side of the head with a puck so that is how I started with the custom settings.
Seriously...Read your manual, go shoot and read it again in a few weeks. Every time I do I figure something else to tweak.

I am disappointed there is not a new button for video since the buttons that it uses by default and customized...I have already assigned to other things!

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations. Now all I need is time away from picture processing to read and learn!

Lonnie, I think I just bought a 300/4 IS. So I'll give it a try and then decide if I need a 300/2.8. What do you think?
