Adding Strobes - Indoor Sports - 04-01-2010, 08:29 AM

I will be adding some strobes soon. Have always had and used White Lightning. however would like to upgrade to Elinchrom for studio work.

Anyone use them for lighting baseketball/volleyball etc? Just want to make sure I have covered everything before I purchase.

Was thinking BXRi 500 or 600RX - would I gain an advantage for sports as well upgrading.

Thanks for your time.

I have never used strobes for sports but I would think you would need the most powerful lights you can afford to use them at less power for faster recycle times? My thought would be a stronger light with faster recycle.

Damn your fast, Thomas!

Well recycle time is important but not the main issue to me. Flash duration is also a big factor and Im not sure I understand it quite yet.

More power is nice but the ones I picked should be fine... Im not needing the Ranger yet

There is a thread here that might help.

http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...otography.html

I was using 600 w.s. Powerlights at half power. ISO 500 and f7.1.

Thanks Don... I know the power will be suffecient for what I want to do. I just want to make sure the flash duration and recylce time are going to work for me. I also want to make sure I am not missing an important factor .

I have used the White Lightning 1600's for a couple of years. However, the color isnt quite consistent for what I need when taking 300 dance portraits

If you adjust your FlexTT5 hypersync to -1700ms, you can shoot at 1/500th of a second or faster with the profoto 600r's. Their full power recycle time is listed as .8 seconds, so half power should be .4 seconds, plenty of speed and light.

Recycle time isn't the most important thing. Flash duration is.

exactly... and I cant find much info on the T1 duration for the RX600's.

Davis the above links are great for how to do it but dont discuss my exact question. I have used White Lightning 1600's many times. Will I lose anything from switching to Elinchrom as it relates to flash duration or other things I might not be thinking about? I know they are powerful enough and recylce time isnt a major concern. Also looking for info about build quality, ease or transport, etc as it relates to using Elinchrom on site.

Thanks everyone for the comments so far.

Sounds good... I had Plano rink set up perfect for ice skating one time...4 lights. Only be told no flash during performance 10 minutes before the start. I had approval from everyone up the chain of the organization running the thing, but the main judge (or whatever they are called) wasnt having it.

Im sure you love the color chaging lights at the Stars rinks as much as me. You can actually see the walls glow from yellow to white with your eyes.
