Canon 400 f/2.8 Series II or 300 f/2.8 IS - 10-14-2010, 02:54 AM

For high school football on a 7D, if you had the choice of a 400 2.8 series II or a 300 f/2.8 IS, which would you choose and explain why. Also both are like new condition w/ 1 year warranty on each. Thanks, JJ

Shoot tight crop tighter.

I have the 500L, 400L and the 300L but use them on 1D series bodies (1.3) and for football it is always the 400L over the 300L. For daytime only football, soccer or baseball I have been known to use the 500L and not the 400L but never the 300L for the big field sports.

I just picked up a 400 for football and honestly wish I had a 600. Would like to have a 300 for fastpitch, but money don't grow on trees :0)

I believe my 300 on my 7D is sufficient. I haven't shot a 400 so I can't compare it.

Sure, more reach is good at times, but so is less. I'm assuming you have a second body and a shorter lens for that action that comes at you as the longer lenses don't do it all.

Depends on your shooting style. I cover the NFL with my 300 2.8L IS. I love it. My partner in crime shoots with a 400 2.8L II.

For HS Football, the 300mm works great with the 7D. The 400mm is just too much and leaves you little options for cropping.

I've shot both and prefer the 400 for football. As stated earlier...shoot tight, crop tighter.

Where did you get a one year warranty on an 11 year-old lens?

The Camera shop I buy my equipment is where I get the warranty. They usually give a 6 month or 1 year warranty depending on the condition of the used items. Thanks to everyone for the replies. I do have a second body, the Mark III and I use it with a 70-200 IS.

I shoot both. Honestly, I prefer the 300 on a 1.6 crop. The 400 seems to limiting. On the 1d, I always reach for the 400.

$11,000 for the 400 2.8 II vs $4500 for the 300 2.8 I. Is that 100mm reach worth $6500? Like most have said with the 300 you can crop. With the 400 you are almost limited to what you can crop as it is a tighter shot.
