First real test of my Sigma 150-500 - 10-23-2010, 09:46 PM

Have not been around in awhile. School has been keeping me real busy. Today I went to the Wings Over Houston Air Show and finally put my Sigma to the test. I will have to say that the lens performed very well. Here is one of my photos from the show.

I took around 2,600 photos at the air show. With all the school work I have it is going to take me a week or so to get through them all. Here are a few that I have processed.

Awesome shots! I'm jealous. i went two years ago, and wanted to this year, but just couldn't make it. So I take it you love the lens now?

I am very much in love with the lens. I went back and forth between it and the Sigma 120-400 or the Canon 100-400. I am not a fan of the push pull zoom on the Canon (would be strange to have only one lens that worked that way) and I settled on the Sigma 120-400, also the difference in price swayed that decision. After thinking about it before I got the lens I realized that there is like what, 1/3 of a stop difference between the 120-400 and 150-500. Figured I could make that up with a bump in ISO and get another 100mm of zoom.

The IS in the lens is great. The two shots of the Thunderbirds was after about 6 hours of holding the lens and taking photos (all the shots are hand held). It also is pretty sharp all the way through the zoom range. The Thunderbird shots are at 150mm and the sky divers are at 500mm. The dive bomber is around 300mm if I remember correctly.

I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a less expensive alternative to a Canon or Nikon zoom. Well worth the money. Looking forward to some good pictures this year while in the deer stand.

Your shots are great! The combination of the 150-500 and 7D is a winner.

@Tim, I got the 7D just before getting the lens and have been really happy with the 7D and now with the lens.

Nice shots, the first one especially. I have a Sigma 150-500 as well and it's a great lens for the money. I was able to get some good shots at the Denton Airshow with mine.

I got both at the same time. I was coming from the original Digital Rebel (300D) and had no lens longer than 300mm. Can you say learning curve?

I wanted to go to the airshow, but an overflowing toilet at my mom's house kept me busy throughout the weekend.
