Some 7th grade Basketball - 02-02-2011, 02:32 PM

Well thought since I had not posted anything in a while I would put a few of my favorites up of my son and some of his team. All taken with either a 7D or 1D mkIII at iso3200 because it must be a rule for middle school gyms to be dungeons!

Each game I have been trying different techniques to get the shot in focus and think the back button focus has made the biggest improvement for me.

Windows and ISO - 02-04-2011, 10:32 AM

Don't you just love lots of windows in gyms! Our 2nd gym at Klein Oak has two glass doors at one end so I'm often fighting the same problem.

I'm curious as to why you are limiting yourself to ISO 3200. Some of these show considerable motion blur. I'm usually shooting at ISO 5000 with my 7D even in high school gyms. I'm usually at 6400 or above with my 1DIV. Noise at those settings is pretty easily controlled with these cameras. At least I don't find it objectionable.

I shot a league game for a friend last weekend in the 2nd gym at Aldine Nimitz. That qualifies as the worst gym I've ever shot in. I was forced to go to ISO 12,800 on my 1D4. That froze the action but I just couldn't find a white balance that worked for multiple pictures. Very frustrating.

I don't shoot much basketball so I have been playing with settings all year. I did bump it up to iso 5000 last week and it did in some cases improve my shots. in the beginning of this year I was under-exposing real bad and so my iso 3200 shots were coming out with a ton of noise.

Each game I have improved a bit and I have been making notes about what worked in what gym for next year. Hopefully I will start to get a method of shooting that will work better than this year :)
